WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Fatal Fire In Alton Was Devastating For Family And First Responders Fatal fires don't happen often in Alton and much of the reason is the quick response and training of the Alton Fire Department and neighboring fire agencies. When Alton firefighters arrived this past week at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, November 18, at Nolte Place in Alton there was intense smoke coming from the back of the home. Unfortunately, a woman - 63-year-old LaDon Mick lost her life in the fire, along with a pet dog. The woman's death was due to smoke inhalation, firefighters have said. Family members came to the scene and they were beyond devastated by what had happened. It was heartbreaking to see the family's pain at the scene. The goal of first responders is to save and protect lives and so often they do. However, this time, they couldn't because of the extreme circumstances that existed when they arrived at the scene, it was impossible to save the victim's life. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Follow Up: Firefighters extinguish Grafton blaze after long weekend battling bluffs fire Dry and windy conditions were not favorable for when a wildfire broke out in the Grafton area on Friday afternoon, just east of Raging Rivers. QEM Fire Protection District Fire Chief Gerry New said they basically just had to let mother nature go to work and let it burn itself out. The first call came in around 2:15 p.m. on Friday. The QEM Fire Department was joined by crews from the Brighton, Fieldon, Godfrey, and Jerseyville departments at various stages. Crews worked until dark on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday when they had to pull out because of safety issues. The location of the fire made it a challenge. "Most of the area you can't access them at all because of the terrain and this thing being on the bluffs. A lot of the hillside is just straight up and down," Chief New said. He said letting it burn and come to them was about the best they could do. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Homewood Launches Project Fire Buddies In Time For Holidays The Homewood chapter of Project Fire Buddies made their first ever visit last week, meeting with two Homewood families whose children were in need of holiday cheer. The non-profit group, originally started by an Oak Forest firefighter who wanted to give back to children who had serious illnesses, stopped by 8-year-old Rowan's home and 4-year-old Joy's. Rowan is diagnosed with Leukemia and Joy is undergoing chemotherapy. Both children and their siblings were given gifts ranging from puzzles and balloons to a miniature fire truck to ride around in. Joy's mother told Patch the young girl is already zooming around their neighborhood. The group has expanded to over 15 chapters around the southern suburbs of Chicago. While Joy and Rowan are the first Homewood Fire Buddies, a spokesman for the group said they plan on meeting even more during the holiday season. HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR PATCH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WEYI-TV NBC 25 SAGINAW Too many firefighters are dying of cancer; Veteran California firefighter aims to change that They're our modern-day superheroes — charging into burning buildings without hesitation, rescuing those in peril, staving off destruction. But in risking their lives for us, firefighters pay a heavy price, with cancer rates that far outpace the public at large. Derek Urwin, a longtime firefighter who expects to complete his Ph.D. in chemistry during the winter quarter, is out to change that, using his knowledge of chemistry to improve firefighter health and safety and, ultimately, bring these cancer rates down. It's a mission that had a very personal origin. In 2014, Urwin's brother Isaac, then 33, died of leukemia. Urwin, who was serving with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, took time off to care for him through his chemotherapy treatments. UCLA NEWSROOM North Carolina firefighter will soon light up the neighborhood to brighten the holidays VIDEO/PHOTOS: His name may not be Griswold, but Justin Rhodes has mapped out a stunning show that debuts on Thanksgiving night outside his home at 93 Crayton Road in Asheville. "One of the big reasons I do it is seeing the joy it brings to kids," said Rhodes, who's been working since Nov. 1. "All of our props are custom made," he explained. For the third year, he's got something epic planned. The show itself is called E.L.F.'s holiday light show. E.L.F. stands for Extreme Lighting Fanatic. "This is pretty much the layout of the house," he told us at his computer, showing us how the holiday magic happens. "It's a 3D model of the house that's all the props I have in the yard." WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE South Dakota: Looking Back at The Great Murdo Fire of 1910 PHOTOS: Murdo, South Dakota had only just gotten started as a town when disaster struck on a cold February night in 1910. A fire that was likely started by a hot stovepipe in a printing business on Main Street quickly spread to nearby buildings and destroyed an entire block of businesses before it finally burned itself out. Wayne Esmay owns an electrical contracting business in Murdo and today owns one of the buildings erected on Main Street after the fire. Esmay is also an amateur historian and has studied the story of the fire and its aftermath. "Nobody knows for sure how it started, but they think it was the wood burning stove in the print shop. The editor of the paper, he started the fire and went up to his residence on the upper floor. In a couple hours there was smoke and he raised the alarm. It was pretty devastating. It was the most devastating fire that Murdo has ever had." SOUTH DAKOTA PUBLIC BROADCASTING COVID-19 Rebound in U.S. Is as Bad as Last November's in Some Spots The latest U.S. COVID-19 wave is taking its toll on some states' intensive-care units, with several parts of the country seeing outbreaks that are as bad as ever. In 15 states, patients with confirmed or suspected COVID are taking up more ICU beds than a year earlier, according to Department of Health and Human Services data. Colorado, Minnesota and Michigan have 41%, 37% and 34% of ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, respectively, the data show. In some areas, COVID patients are filling ICU beds as much as ever before The dramatic uptick means there's proportionately less space in hospitals for those suffering from other potentially deadly ailments. "Many of our physicians are at a breaking point," said Ali Mokdad, a professor with the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. "It's not easy to be day in and day out in an emergency room, in an ICU, looking at someone who is dying because he or she is not vaccinated." BLOOMBERG - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
