Rockford house fire displaces two people, kills four pets A fire in Rockford Tuesday morning kept first responders busy for almost three hours. The cause of the fire at 1643 Arlington Avenue is still under investigation, but the two people living there were able to get out safely, along with one of their dogs. Unfortunately, four other pets died. The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes, according to District Chief Kyle Hill, but not before causing around $100,00 in damage. Crews stayed at the scene until about 7:30 to assist the residents and assess the damage. The two people living there are now displaced. In the wake of Tuesday morning, the Rockford Fire Department reminds people to make sure all bedroom smoke detectors work and to practice emergency exit drills. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Drivers damage equipment while crews respond to Hoopeston fire The Hoopeston Fire Department said some equipment was damaged by drivers while they were responding to a fire on Sunday morning. The fire occurred at the 1000 block of W. Main St. Crews extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. The fire department said that while they were extinguishing the fire, drivers ran over a fire hose and hazard cones, causing damage to both. They said the damage was easily preventable and they are thankful no one was hurt. They shared on Facebook that the vehicles and owners have been identified and the drivers were ticketed. In recent months, Illinois State Police have been encouraging safe driving around emergency vehicles after an officer was hit in Effingham. Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a proclamation making Oct. 15 "Slow Down, Move Over Day" to raise awareness about safe driving, specifically around emergency vehicles and construction areas. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN 'Keep the Wreath Red' campaign launches December 1st in Peoria Starting Thursday you will see holiday wreaths adorn the City of Peoria's 12 fire stations. This is part of the fire departments "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign. Wreaths at all city fire stations are illuminated with red bulbs and firefighters will replace a red bulb with a white one for each structure fire in a home or commercial building. During the 2021 campaign there were 15 fire related incidents that left four people hurt and an estimated $781,200 in damages. The "Keep the Wreath Red" progrma was adopted by Illinois Fire Chiefs in 1980 as a way to alert the community of fires caused by holiday decorations. The city of Peoria started the program in 1995. The campaign starts Thursday, December 1st and ends New Year's Day. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 25 PEORIA Quincy City Council tables building code ordinance adoption Quincy City Council was supposed to make a decision on updating the city's fire safety codes Monday night. It was a change that would also affect people looking to build a new house in the city. But they didn't because aldermen said they didn't have the documents they needed to make an informed decision in time for Monday night's vote. Aldermen said they received the preliminary information Monday afternoon and that's not enough time for them to review it. 5th Ward Alderman Mike Rein said there are more than 300 changes to the building code they didn't get a chance to fully review. "I just felt that the code deserved a thorough review before we reject or accept, so that was the reason I asked for six weeks. So that all the aldermen had a chance to review the document in its entirety and get their questions answered," 5th Ward Alderman Mike Rein said. WGEM-TV NBC 19 QUINCY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fiery tractor trailer crash kills woman in New York, shuts down part of expressway VIDEOS: A woman was killed when her car was sandwiched between two tractor trailers and went up in flames in a horrific crash that caused delays in both directions on the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx. The victim's sedan collided with a tractor trailer, contracted by the U.S. Postal Service, in the westbound lanes at around 12:35 a.m. Tuesday. The woman was sitting in her crashed sedan, stopped behind the tractor trailer, when another tractor slammed into her vehicle. The impact set the sedan ablaze, and the flames spread to the first tractor trailer. The woman was killed in the fire. Both tractor trailer drivers escaped their rigs with no injury, but the first truck was also destroyed by fire. All westbound lanes of the expressway were closed, and one lane was getting by eastbound as first responders worked to douse the flames and police investigated. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Florida fire department gets new airplane training facility VIDEO: The Charlotte County Fire and EMS headquarters is about to become a hot place. Tuesday, the county will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new $9 million Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting training facility. It's a simulator, that looks like a normal-sized passenger jet, sitting on the county property behind the fire administration building. "So the seats are the same, the aisles are the same, the cockpit is the same, the dimensions are the same," Charlotte County Fire Battalion Chief, Larry Lippel, says. But this airplane is steel, all black, and made to burn. With a few taps on an iPad, crews can set fire to the wings or the cargo area, and safely control the flames and the heat of the fire. They can also set up safe zones, where other firefighters can watch the active training. Every firefighter who works in an area with an airport needs to get aircraft fire training once a year. WFTX-TV FOX 4 CAPE CORAL Colorado: Smart phones or watches might be calling 911 without you knowing, and dispatchers need it to stop VIDEO: We're talking between 40 to 60 fake 911 calls a day, coming into the Summit County Dispatch Center. Team members expect this only to get worse as the season picks up for skiers. Summit County Director 911, Trina Dummer, was more than happy to sit down with CBS News Colorado to get a message out to the public before a big gift-giving holiday begins. She warns that some versions of Apple Watches and iPhone 14s have a system on them that automatically sends a 911 call if they detect a crash. The issue is, every one of those calls that came in this year have not been real emergencies. The calls have been people crashing while skiing but being fine or even stopping too suddenly while skiing. The alert system gives someone 20 seconds to stop the alarm from going out to dispatch, but according to dispatchers that's simply not happening for whatever reason. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER Ford Recalls Nearly 522,000 Escapes, Bronco Sports Over Fire Risk Ford's latest major recall affects nearly 522,000 of its popular Escape and Bronco Sport mid-size SUVs. The issue involves a fuel leak inside the engine compartment. Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-23 Escapes and model-year 2021-23 Bronco Sports equipped with 1.5-liter engines. The issue is with the fuel injector, which may crack and leak; as a result, fuel or fuel vapor may accumulate near a hot surface on the engine or around exhaust components, potentially causing ignition and an underhood fire, increasing the risk of injury. To resolve the issue, dealers will update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube for free. CARS.COM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
