PHOTOS: A man was hospitalized with critical injuries and a firefighter was also injured after an alert officer spotted a house fire that ended up displacing nine residents in Woodstock Monday morning. The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 5:10 a.m. Monday to the 200 block of South Jefferson Street in Woodstock for a report of a structure fire. A vigilant Woodstock police officer was passing through the area and reported the fire, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha. The officer began alerting the occupants of the home while the fire department was en route. Vucha said initial reports indicated a large fire with someone trapped on the third floor. Firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes and confirmed a working fire in the rear of the home. LAKE & MCHENRY COUNTY SCANNER VIDEO: On Saturday, 20 participants, including elected officials and local journalists, suited up to understand just a fraction of what it's like to be a firefighter. "It's exciting to see them out here going through those same steps as our guys are doing and learning," said Eric West, Bloomington Fire Chief. It's a part of Bloomington Firefighters Local 49 third Fire Ops 101. The union put an emphasis on "staffing and stations" to showcase why they need the resources they request and utilize. Those participating spent the day in several simulation exercises including being in a burning building, performing an extrication and hazmat and EMS procedures. Participants included several Bloomington council members, State Representative Sharon Chung and State Senator Sally Turner. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA |

A large cloud of smoke billowed above Mission Bay on Monday afternoon after a building caught on fire at Campland by the Bay. The two-alarm fire began in Adventure Water Sports, a recreation rental business near the beach of the campground located at 2211 Pacific Beach Drive. By 2:25 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters on the ground were gaining control over the flames, which had engulfed the structure. A hook-and-ladder was also on the scene hitting the fire with a water cannon. "I saw a significant amount of smoke, I saw it going dark, black pretty quickly, it made me think this was something petroleum-based related," SDFD Chief Jared Daneen said. The building, which was empty at the time the fire sparked, stored golf carts, electric and manual pedal bikes and other rentable equipment, according to Daneen. KNSD-TV NBC 7 SAN DIEGO VIDEO: Portland police responded to eight people who overdosed on Monday morning in the Pearl District, near the North Park Blocks. Officers said the people ingested a powder likely laced with fentanyl. The overdoses happened in the area of Northwest Couch Street and Park Avenue, among the North Park Blocks. Firefighters and paramedics responded around 10 a.m. with ambulances to transport victims. All eight people were given the opioid overdose reversal medication Narcan. Four people were taken to the hospital. The other four victims refused to be transported, according to police. According to Rick Graves, spokesman for Portland Fire & Rescue, the people who overdosed were all young — ranging from their late teens to early 20s. KGW-TV NBC 8 PORTLAND VIDEO: A call to a reported house fire in Glens Falls over the weekend turned out to be something else-- just in time for the Halloween season. Check this out-- that's the home... It looks like a massive fire in the windows. But it's actually Halloween decorations-- some lights, a fan, a fog machine and a silver sheet. The Glens Falls fire department doesn't appear bothered by the false alarm, calling it an "amazing" display. But it did spark some controversy in the Facebook comments-- one person saying they should have notified the fire department to avoid false calls. The home on Sanford Street will be lit up on Friday and Saturday nights through the end of the month. WRGB-TV CBS 6 SCHENECTADY A nationwide test of the emergency and wireless alert systems will be conducted Wednesday at 2:20 p.m. ET, when a message will be sent to all cellphones, TVs and radios. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a news release in August that a message that reads, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed," will be sent to all phones. A Spanish version of the message will be displayed depending on the language settings of the devices. A separate message will be sent to radios and televisions, saying, "This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public." NBC NEWS |
