Building collapse Chicago: 1 killed, 2 seriously injured in Garfield Park, fire officials say Chicago building officials are removing unstable parts of a Garfield Park home after a man died and two men were seriously injured when part of the home collapsed onto its front porch Tuesday. Chopper7 was over the 3400-block of West Jackson Boulevard about 4 p.m. as Chicago firefighters pulled one of the men from beneath the rubble. He appeared to be talking as he was removed on a stretcher. Chicago fire officials said a 32-year-old man and a 68-year-old man were critically injured and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital for treatment. Anthony Wright, 52, was trapped under the rubble and pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said. A firefighter suffered a minor injury while responding to the scene. Officials said the part of the building that collapsed onto the porch is called a "cockloft." The officials said bricks crumbled, causing it to fail. The sound of the collapse was heard around the neighborhood. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO 2 firetrucks donated to Washington Park Fire Department as funding calls go unanswered Six months after a massive fire burned down the Washington Park Fire House, a fire department on the east coast donated two trucks to help. The side of the firetrucks read like a passport. Each logo is a sign of every stop on their journey to their new home in Washington park. One red and white and blue, both firetrucks were donated by the Elk Lake Fire Department roughly 900 miles away in Pennsylvania. "The red one we've nicknamed Clifford, and we named the white and blue one Betty White," said Washington Park Fire Chief Ronnie Harris. "They're going to allow the two firetrucks that we have now to not run every call. So, the maintenance on the trucks won't be so high." Back in October a massive fire destroyed not only the city's fire house but parts of the police department as well. The burned-down site remains frozen in time. Each piece of rubble and broken glass is a reminder of so much that has yet to be done. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Emergency agencies test disaster skills in Carbondale VIDEO/PHOTOS: Miles of railroad tracks run through Southern Illinois, bringing passenger and freight trains. Have you ever wondered what would happen if there was a train-car accident? That was the setting for a mock disaster Tuesday morning used to train departments across Jackson County. The mock disaster was a collision between a freight train and a black Ford truck full of passengers. The accident began with the train derailing and leaking hazardous chemicals. The east side of the train tracks at East College Street was littered with victims of the fake crash. Two adults did not survive the accident. A child also was laying on the sidewalk near the train tracks. The child (a training dummy) was taken from the sidewalk by a Carbondale firefighter and rinsed with water in the middle of East College Street to decontaminate him. THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN- METERED SITE Multiple departments respond to vehicle accident in Gulfport Multiple crews responded to an accident, where a person and a dog were rescued in Gulfport, Illinois Tuesday afternoon. According to the Burlington Fire Department, crews were called just before 4:30 p.m. to Gulfport for a vehicle accident with two trapped inside. Firefighters arrived and found witnesses on scene with one vehicle on it's top in a drainage ditch, according to officials. The ditch was filled with water, submerging over half of the vehicle. Officials say firefighters had to enter the water in order to gain access to the vehicle. They found one person and a dog inside the vehicle. KWQC-TV NBC 6 DAVENPORT Chicago woman collecting equipment for Ukrainian firefighters: 'I want to help people' A local effort is underway to help the heroes of Ukraine. A collection of equipment for firefighters is being sent overseas. The donation drive was started by a Ukrainian woman who is living in Chicago and was watching firefighters scramble to rescue civilians in bombed buildings. The Chicago Fire Department and Des Plaines Fire Department have already answered her call. Yana Feyganova is collecting walkie-talkies, lanterns, safety clothing, hose nozzles and more. The materials will be sent to 30 fire stations in northeast Ukraine, which is currently ground zero for Russian attacks. "I feel that I want to help people. And, I want to help people who are saving these lives because savers need help as well," said Feyganova. She's already gathered 100 sets of gear. It's being stored in a Schiller Park warehouse until it is shipped to Ukraine. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters with the Ventura County Fire Department were called to the hotel located at Ventura Boulevard and Las Posas Road at about 7:15 p.m. When crews arrived, heavy smoke was pouring out from the second and fourth floor, investigators said. At one point, Highway 101 was closed in both directions due to damage caused to nearby power lines. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Death of 3 firefighters in southwest Baltimore fire in January ruled homicide The fire of a vacant rowhome in southwest Baltimore that took the lives of three Baltimore City firefighters in January has been ruled a homicide. Lt. Paul Butrim, Lt. Kelsey Sadler, and Firefighter/EMT Kenny Lacayo lost their lives battling the deadly fire at 205 South Striker Street on January 24. EMT/firefighter John McMaster was injured in the blaze. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives classified the fire as incendiary. "Thoughts of Lt. Butrim, Lt. Sadler, and Firefighter/EMT Lacayo have been present in our minds every step of this investigation, ATF Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Toni M. Crosby said. "We would like to thank members of the community who contacted ATF and our partners with information, as well as for their outpouring of support for Baltimore City Fire Department and the loved ones of these fallen heroes. WBAL-AM 1090 BALTIMORE Kentucky fire department receives corvette donation from National Corvette Museum VIDEO: The Bowling Green Fire Department received a unique donation Monday - a fire-engine red corvette from the National Corvette Museum. The corvette will be used this year for school prevention classes, parades, and special events. "Working here going on 125 years, you know, this year and we've had this corvette plant here for quite some time. It just seemed like a seamless team to build here with building our corvette with the last three on the vin number being 911. With them being in our backdoor, us having their logo on our patch, our brand. This was about team," said BG Fire Chief Justin Brooks. Want a chance to own this corvette? WBKO-TV ABC/FOX/CW+ 13 BOWLING GREEN EMS in one Texas city struggling with staffing due to low wages, union says Negotiating new pay for the first time in four years, the City of Austin received some major blowback after offering a 14 cent raise for entry-level employees in Austin's emergency medical services department. According to the Austin EMS Association, 26% of its staff are considered low income. In a statement, the city said a pay study found the maximum pay for Austin EMTs and paramedics is higher "than that of comparable agencies when you adjust wages for regional costs." Austin EMS Association said that is not true. Selena Xie, president of the association, said the sticking point in city negotiations is the starting wage of $19.56 per hour. "We have a lot of medics who work here that have not worked here that long, she said. "All of those medics are making these poverty wages." The association asked for that base pay to be increased to $27 per hour – and they believe the city's counteroffer of $19.70 per hour falls short. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Oklahoma City bombing first responders now lead their departments VIDEO: Two young first responders to the Oklahoma City bombing are now leading their departments. It is their mission to make sure new OKC fire and police recruits know what happened that day almost 27 years ago. Both men responded in the hours and days after a bomb went off outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building that killed 168 people. "It wasn't just a rescue and recovery, it was an investigation," Oklahoma City Fire Chief Richard Kelley said. Oklahoma City police Chief Wade Gourley was 26 years old and Oklahoma City Fire Chief Richard Kelley was 24 years old. "The whole thing was a crime scene, so everything that came out of there had to be sifted through and looked at for any potential evidence," Gourley said. Kelley worked to rescue and recover victims and spent days moving debris, bucket by bucket. KOCO-TV ABC 5 OKLAHOMA CITY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
