| Firefighters in Metropolis stabilize building and rescue driver after crash Firefighters in Metropolis were busy on Tuesday after helping a driver who crashed into a business. It happened just after 8 a.m. when crews responded to a truck that crashed into a welding supply store on West 10th Street. Firefighters worked to get the driver out of the vehicle while other fire crews started to stabilize the store structure. The driver was quickly removed from the vehicle and taken to Massac Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG Chicago first responders surprise local kids with school supplies, candy and more There was a special surprise Tuesday for more than 150 members of the Boys and Girls Club in Little Village courtesy of local first responders. The kids were gifted with school supplies, candy, toys, books and more. The giveaway is part of the Cook County Regional Organized Crime Task Force's ‘Smiles Events' looking to support children from under-resourced areas. Each family received a gift bag and a Home Depot gift card for household needs. Organizers say the goal is to make a difference for local families. "Today, when we come with these gifts to celebrate what it means to be a young person in this city, to know that we see you, we see your potential to be anything that you want to be, whether it's a police officer or a lawyer, a teacher, a caregiver, a worker who comes to the girls and boys clubs, or Boys and Girls clubs, to give back, that's why we're here," said Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO No one injured after fire at Elmwood home A mom, son and pets escaped a house fire in Elmwood earlier Tuesday. Elmwood Fire Chief Robert Tannock says the son, between 8-10 years old, woke up to smoke in the home and then woke up his mom before escaping with pets. The department was on another call before arriving on scene and seeing flames coming out of the windows. The fire took about 45 minutes to put out. Tannock said, "the house is destroyed." The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The house is in the 700 block of South Althea. | VIDEO: Firefighters put out fire at Texas boat and RV storage warehouse Firefighters put out a warehouse fire Wednesday morning that was sparked by candles a man lit in north Houston, and SkyEye was the first on scene. The fire started at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at A-Safe-T Storage at 11539 N. Houston Rosslyn at Breen Drive. SkyEye video shows the warehouse, which stores boats and RVs, is a total loss. Authorities said the fire started when a man walked away from the candles he had lit to help get his day started. "There's no light back there, no connection. CenterPoint even called out, and there's no power back there so I guess they only had candles. No iPhones or flashlights or anything," District Chief Roland Silva with the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department said. Firefighters were seen taking water out of a nearby watershed to put the fire out. The department also called for four tankers and seven engines, which each hold 1,000 gallons of water. There were no injuries, according to Silva, just several items of value lost. One hundred sixty-eight people died when terrorists detonated a bomb at the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in downtown Oklahoma City. The day forever changed the lives of many Oklahomans, including first responders. Now, every year around this time, firefighters and others come together for a "Ride to Remember." Motorcycle riders from near and far come together to remember. "I'll never forget it as long as I live," said Marty Thorne, retired Oklahoma City Fire Department, Wind and Fire Motorcycle Club member. Many are retired firefighters who responded to the bombing. "One of the things that caught my attention right away right out front of the Regency Apartments, was the axle from the Ryder truck that embedded in a vehicle that was parked outside The Regency Tower apartment," said Keith Bryant, retired OKCFD, Wind and Fire Motorcycle Club. The Ann Street garage — which was originally constructed in 1925 -- obtained its certificate of occupancy in 1957. That certificate allowed for five or more cars to be on each floor — and footage from Tuesday's collapse showed well more than that on each level. Dozens of cars and SUVs were seen in the collapsed rubble. Investigators began to meticulously comb through the details Wednesday as the immediate area remained shut down. Wary of the danger of further collapse, officials warned their investigation would likely be exhaustive, and prolonged, meaning there's no telling when a final cause may be determined. Jacob Stevens' family made the difficult decision to say goodbye after the Greenfield teen spent nearly a week on a ventilator. WSYX in Columbus said Stevens was attempting what's been dubbed the "Benadryl Challenge" on TikTok. The trend tasks participants with taking between 12 and 14 tablets of the antihistamine, six times the recommended dose, to induce hallucinations. Stevens' family told WSYX that the teen was at home with his friends earlier this month when he overdosed. His friends were filming him down the tablets when his body began seizing. "No brain scan. There was nothing there. He said we could keep him on the vent — we could, you know, he could lay there like that but he will never open his eyes, he will never breathe on his own, do anything like that," Stevens' grandmother Dianna said.
