Bloomington Testing Site To Again Expand Criteria To Include Some Without Symptoms Even if they don't have symptoms, "critical infrastructure" workers like grocery store and restaurant employees will soon be able to be tested for the coronavirus at Bloomington's drive-up site, state officials said Tuesday. Up until now, the only asymptomatic people who could be tested there were first responders and medical personnel. It's unclear when the change will take effect. "With Monday's update in federal guidelines for testing, the Bloomington testing site will expand testing to align with the testing guidance at other state sites," a state public health spokesperson said late Tuesday. The Bloomington site has tested nearly 3,000 people since opening last month. But it's still underutilized. It's averaging about 98 people per day, and its capacity is 250. WGLT 89.1 NPR Springfield Fire Department exceeded their budget by over half a million dollars The 2020 fiscal budget: A hot topic on Tuesday nights, Committee of the Whole meeting after officials said the Springfield Fire Department exceeded its budget by over $600,000. This is due to increased overtime. Springfield Fire Chief Allen Reyne said the reason the number is so high is because of a lot of injuries, military leave, and long-term sick leave. These overtime costs are from the fiscal year 2020 budget. Chief Reyne said these are the most difficult things to budget for, and they all seem to be at their peaks last year. "It's normally manageable but it's always somewhat flexible," Reyne said. "This the first time, I believe, since 2002 we have gone over that line. We always try to stay within budget and sometimes things happen that are beyond our control." WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Front-line workers in Naperville grateful but sometimes overwhelmed by meal donations from residents The outpouring of community support to Naperville first responders and health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic has been amazing, officials say. Meals have been delivered, baked goods dropped off and other gifts of food presented. And while the acts of kindness have been uplifting, they sometimes can also be overwhelming. Many organizations are now asking the community to make a call or send an email before showing up at the door to ensure donations to go to waste or can be directed to the places where the need is greatest. Meals are welcome at Edward Hospital in Naperville, said Dave Edwards, director for food and nutrition for Edward-Elmhurst Health, but they can only accept food that is commercially prepared under health department guidelines. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Alsip Launches 'Hearts for Heroes' Campaign Mayor John Ryan is asking Alsip residents and businesses to show their love and respect for the work frontline workers and first responders are doing during the coronavirus pandemic by decorating their doors and windows. "Hearts for Heroes" is the brainchild of Tr. Catalina Nava-Esparza, who suggested a campaign where residents and businesses could show their thanks and appreciation to those keeping communities from COVID-19. The campaign honors police, fire, hospital workers and especially nursing home personnel, as these professionally trained staff are doing everything possible to treat those who need their help most. $10B sought in next stimulus bill for nation's fire departments in need of PPE, funding Some fire departments around the country are growing desperate for more personal protective equipment and funding to fully operate during this pandemic. While most departments in the D.C. area say they have what they need, some recognize the possibility of running out. Some fire departments around the U.S. have been forced to get creative when it comes to protecting fire and EMS workers on the front lines. For example, some firefighters in Phoenix, AZ have been spotted wearing ponchos. Others have been seen handling COVID-19 patients without gowns. Gary Ludwig, an Illinois fire chief and president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, said fire departments should not have to go through this. "Right now, I can't say that we feel like a priority," Ludwig said. WDVM-TV CBS 25 HAGERSTOWN Data Science Wizards Tell Us What's Really Happening With Coronavirus The global curve is flattening, but COVID-19 (coronavirus) infections are still rising and new hotspots, like Brazil, may be emerging. That's a big improvement from weeks of dire, exponential growth across the world. But global or even U.S.-wide stats are difficult to parse when you're trying to figure out if the local situation in your town and state is getting better or worse. Fortunately, a mix of leading data visualization specialists and passionate scientists have crunched the numbers on COVID-19 (healthcare statistics being compiled by the likes of Johns Hopkins or the New York Times) for graphs and visualizations that help shed light on the spread of the virus. Find out how well your county is battling the outbreak compared to others, or whether a state is really flattening its curve, or maybe more importantly, how flat the curve needs to get. POPULAR MECHANICS Editorial: Health care suicides are another tragic toll of the coronavirus pandemic "She tried to do her job, and it killed her": So said Dr. Philip Breen of his daughter, Dr. Lorna Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital — who died by suicide Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., where she was staying with family. Her work amid the coronavirus pandemic took such a toll. "She was truly in the trenches of the front line," he told The New York Times. "Make sure she's praised as a hero, because she was. She's a casualty just as much as anyone else who died." Not only did Lorna Breen care for patients affected by COVID-19; she was infected herself — then tried to go back to work after recuperating for a week and a half. Her hospital sent her home again, and her family brought her to Charlottesville. Breen isn't the only frontliner to take her own life after witnessing the horrors of the coronavirus firsthand: A rookie Bronx EMT, John Mondello, killed himself Friday after less than three months on the job, police sources told The Post. NEW YORK POST Mattel honors workers leading fight against COVID-19 with special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection Mattel is honoring essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight with a special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection from Fisher-Price. The collection will include sixteen different figures that will be a selection of doctors, nurses, EMTs and delivery drivers. Mattel will also offer a special five-character Little People set that includes a grocery store worker figure. "#ThankYouHeroes is designed to immortalize and honor healthcare workers and every day heroes," Chuck Scothon, Senior Vice President of Fisher-Price and global head of Infant and Preschool at Mattel said. "Whether these toys are given as a gift to recognize someone working on the front lines, or used as a tool to help children have a conversation about how they're feeling, it is our hope that Fisher-Price toys, and play in general, can ultimately make these difficult times easier for both kids and adults."
