Sen. Tharp Applauds Federal Move To Honor Police Officers, Firefighters and Emergency Responders Members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives have approved the Public Safety Officer Support Act to expand the Public Safety Officers' Benefits program to families who lose a first responder to suicide. Calling upon his experience as a police officer, State Senator Kris Tharp (D-Bethalto) commends the federal effort to offer support to more families and released the following statement: "First responders have regular exposure to traumatic events and life-threatening situations, and the stress of working long hours under high-stakes conditions can take a toll on mental health. "Advancing the Public Safety Officer Support Act helps ensure family members of first responders who have died by suicide are able to receive support their loved ones earned through their public service. RIVER BENDER Piatt County Emergency Management Agency seeks direction on assistance during county fires Piatt County Emergency Management Agency officials say they are willing to help out county fire departments during fires, but are looking for direction on how much help and when. EMA director Rob Bross told the EMA Commmittee he has been asked twice recently to assist fire departments at the scene of fires to supply water and in one instance, food. One was a structure fire in Hammond and the other was the shed fire on the DeLand-Monticello blacktop on July 11. "The previous director (Mike Holmes) would supply food on occasion and water," Bross said. "I don't mind getting water, but when it gets to food, I need some direction." There is no line item in the current fiscal year budget for such expenses. PIATT COUNTY JOURNAL-REPUBLICAN Guard tower struck by lightning, catches fire at Logan County Correctional Center Lightning struck the guard tower at Logan County Correctional Center in Lincoln igniting a fire there as storms pounded parts of Central Illinois Monday morning. Prison staffers safely evacuated the tower even as flames tore through the roof about 9:50 a.m., according to a post on the Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District Facebook page. Fire crews used the ladder truck to pour water on the burning structure. Firefighters said they used a hand line to extinguish hot spots. No one was hurt. Lincoln Rural and Lincoln City firefighters were aided by crews from Atlanta, Mt. Pulaski, Middletown, Elkhart, and the Logan County Paramedic Association. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA Clean up continues after flash flooding in Decatur The rain has finally moved out of Central Illinois, but clean up efforts are still happening in many neighborhoods. All day, emergency crews were responding to dangerous situations across Decatur. Firefighters said its important to be aware that roads in the city can get covered quickly when fast moving storms roll in. "Our crews responded to three different incidents today involving vehicles stuck in underpasses in the flood waters," Deputy Chief Jim Ohl, of the Decatur Fire Department told WAND News. "On two of the scene our guys led people, got them out of their cars," Deputy Chief Ohl explained. He said underpasses in town tend to be the first spots to flood, even after just a few minutes of heavy downpour. "Very common for us to go out there and its usually people who either aren't paying attention or aren't expecting that much water," Deputy Chief Ohl added. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Peoria firefighters respond to gas leak The Peoria Fire Department responded to a natural gas leak at a residential structure near Glendale Avenue and Morton Street Tuesday. According to a Peoria fire press release, the incident occurred at approximately 3:37 p.m. Ameren was already at the scene when firefighters arrived and reported a high concentration of natural gas in the residence. Due to the risk of an explosion, fire crews evacuated nearby homes while Ameren turned off the gas and electricity to the residence. Fire companies determined that the residence was only occupied by two pets at the time of the incident. The structure was ventilated, and the residents were displaced while the home's electricity and gas are off. American Red Cross was requested to provide housing assistance to two adults and four children. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire breaks out at Philadelphia home where 154 jugs of gasoline were found VIDEOS/PHOTOS: The site of an unusual and dangerous discovery in West Philadelphia has been decimated by fire less than 12 hours after the initial investigation began. More than 150 jugs of gasoline were found in the vacant home on the 100 block of 59th Street near Arch Street around 8 p.m. Monday. At 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, the home was on fire. Chopper 6 over the scene showed smoke coming from the home. Several firefighters could be seen battling the fire on the roof.Photos taken earlier from the scene showed flames shooting from the front of the house. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA Kentucky Disaster Was Nation's Deadliest Non-Tropical Flash Flood Since 1977 VIDEO: Last week's Kentucky flood disaster was America's deadliest non-tropical flash flood in 45 years. At least 37 were killed in eastern Kentucky after 6 to 9 inches of rain fell in just 12 hours last Thursday, triggering record flooding on the North Fork Kentucky River in Jackson and Whitesburg, and damaging flooding in several other towns. Some homes were swept away by the raging floodwaters, and many more in valleys were flooded. In the five days that followed, over 1,300 people were rescued, but crews were still pushing to reach those still cut off by mudslides and washed-out roads or bridges, according to the Associated Press. By a flash flood, we're referring to a flood that happens quickly on the order of minutes or hours, with rapid rises in streams, creeks, rivers or urban areas due to torrential rain over a smaller area. Fire Station 30 located at 3905 Old Highway 395 will shut down for an undetermined amount of time. Bats have been found in the living quarters and apparatus bay of the fire station, causing a health and safety risk to fire crews. The District is working with experts to determine what preventative and remediation work is needed to eliminate the bat colonies and associated hazards. Fire personnel and firefighters including paramedics will be relocated to Station 32 and Washoe Valley Station. In addition to rabies, bats can transmit viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections to humans. The Fire District tried to alleviate the infestation problem in 2015, only to have the bats return. KRNV-DT NBC 4 RENO Princeton University Graduate Students Continue Volunteer Fire Service Tradition With degrees in chemical engineering, and graduate study at Princeton University's Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics, Maximillian Nguyen thought that becoming a volunteer firefighter was out of his "normal wheelhouse." But he considers himself "a resident of the town of Princeton and not just a University student," so he decided to give back to the community in appreciation for enjoying what Princeton has to offer. Nguyen is one of four Princeton University graduate students who recently became members of the Princeton Fire Department, and who continue a longstanding cooperative effort that has helped the municipal department supplement its ranks through the University's staff and students' desire to serve the community. The four are the largest group of graduate students to join at one time, according to Princeton University. TOWN TOPICS Michigan firefighter just retired to take a vital role with the MLB's Detroit Tigers Canton firefighter Maureen Stoecklein has switched gear from public safety to professional sports as the Detroit Tigers nutrition coordinator. She was invited to become a crucial member of the professional baseball team's support network in late 2021 and officially retired from firefighting duties this summer to focus on the Tigers' fuel from food. Baseball followers will tell you the Tigers could be playing better on the field. Off the field, Stoecklein is working with a team of chefs and dieticians to make sure they're eating and enjoying the right combination of foods throughout the day. "First of all, I am honored to be working for the hometown team. That is like the coolest thing, because I grew up watching the Tigers (and) going to Tiger Stadium for games," she told Hometown Life in June, during one of her last shifts as a Canton Township firefighter.
