Three People Displaced as Flames Destroy Danville Home Three members of a Danville family are safe but their home was destroyed in an early morning fire Tuesday. Danville Firefighters found flames coming from the residence in the 400 block of Sager Avenue when they arrived shortly after 4:00 a.m. They were on the scene for more than three hours. Some off-duty firefighters were called in to assist those who had already responded to the scene. The home was totally destroyed, and flames caused some minor damage to a vacant home next door. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary damage estimates are being placed at $15-thousand dollars to the residence and $5-thousand dollars to contents. Those displaced by the fire are two adults and a child. WDAN-AM 1490 DANVILLE Illinois Attorney General Sues Superior Battery Over Lithium Battery Fire That Forced Evacuations In Morris In June An industrial fire in Morris forced thousands of families from their homes for four days back in June. The fire broke out inside a warehouse full of lithium batteries – 80 to 100 tons of them – as well as roofing materials and solar panels. The burning batteries had to be smothered with 28 tons of cement. Firefighters resorted to the unconventional and possibly unprecedented tactic because using water or firefighting foam could have caused the batteries to explode. On Tuesday, the Illinois Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the building's owner, Superior Battery, for endangering people's health and the environment. Representatives from the City of Morris also say the owner didn't have a business license – so they had no idea what was inside the building until the fire. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Two rescued in Evanston after sailboats capsize during storms on Lake Michigan Two people were were rescued Tuesday, following multiple reports of several overturned sailboats in Lake Michigan with swimmers struggling in the water. Evanston fire department and the US Coast Guard were among others responding to multiple reports of overturned boats and swimmers struggling in the water. Lily Brandt was one of the rescued swimmers found without life vests, clinging to their capsized boats. "We had to sit there for a while. The wind was actually like 35 [mph], I think," Brandt said. "And eventually, we got picked up by the Coast Gaurd. Everyone is fine. Everyone is accounted for. The boats, not so much, but everyone is good. It was a little scary." 7 firefighters hurt battling multi-alarm house fire in New Jersey A fifth alarm that burned through two Jersey City homes brought down a live power line on firefighters, injuring seven of them. The fire broke out between the Irving Street homes just before 3 a.m. this morning and quickly spread. As firefighters arrived, an energized power line came down on their fire truck, shocking at least four firefighters and a captain. "They were either in the truck or near the truck. they were close enough where they had minor electrical shock," Jersey City Fire Chief Steven McGill said. In all, seven firefighters were taken to Jersey City Medical Center, all with non-life-threatening injuries. Eighteen residents from six families were left homeless by the flames, which forced many to flee in the middle of the night. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK At least 5 aircrafts have landed on freeways in California since 2013 VIDEO/PHOTOS: At least five planes have made emergency landings on San Diego-area freeways in recent years, resulting in one death, multiple injuries and various amounts of damage. The latest came Tuesday when a single-engine Piper PA-32 landed shortly after noon on Interstate 5 east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, hitting a Kia sedan and losing part of a wing after it became lodged in the back of an Audi SUV. Two people in vehicles that were hit suffered minor injuries, but the pilot and passenger of the plane walked away uninjured, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA is investigating to determine what led the pilot to land on the freeway. Four other incidents involving planes have been reported since 2013 throughout San Diego County. KSWB-TV FOX 5 SAN DIEGO Related: New video, audio recordings detail moment plane went down on I-5 near Del Mar 'Come home and stay home': Firefighters in Tennessee plead with City Council for higher pay A large crowd of firefighters took the podium at City Council on Tuesday, pleading for higher pay. Mayor Kelly's budget is currently under review, and one measure focuses on a 24% salary increase for fire cadets. Right now, the starting salary is $32,524 . The increase would bump it up to $40,330. It's an increase that firefighters say is sorely needed. One firefighter described a life stretched thin, especially as a single parent: "As a beginning firefighter I was making $32,000 a year with 2 children. My house payment was roughly $800 a month, I had no car payment, only insurance and gas. The only luxury I afforded my children was a Comcast subscription, so they could watch children shows. While it may seem that these expenses do not amount to much, after ever rising family health insurance premiums, taxes, and pension payments, after all that is taken out it leaves very little to stretch to your other bills." WTVC-TV ABC/FOX 9 CHATTANOOGA Man captures history and documents ‘bravery' of heroes in Wisconsin warehouse fire VIDEO/PHOTOS: A Fort Atkinson photographer captured history for his hometown during a warehouse fire earlier this month. On August 10, Spencer Jelinek said he saw smoke from his balcony. Instead of running from the fire, he ran toward it. "It was just a split reaction. ‘I need to go do this,' and I did it," he said. "I immediately thought the worst, and that's why I grabbed the camera. I was like, ‘OK, well I can grab my camera and document this. If I need to help, I can help." The landscape photographer said he had never captured a fire before that Tuesday. "Honestly, I was a little scared in certain aspects because there were explosions every now and then," he said. A blaze had broken out at an industrial park in the 700 block of Oak Street. It sent a plume of black smoke high into the air. WMTV NBC/CW+ 15 MADISON IAFC Releases Position Statement on COVID-19 Vaccination of Fire and EMS Personnel Throughout the response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and its ensuing illness COVID-19, fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel have consistently served on the front lines while caring for patients and responding to other calls for emergency service. These fire and EMS personnel place themselves in inherently dangerous positions while caring for patients in austere environments and responding to emergencies unrelated to whether a caller has COVID-19. These dangers, combined with unprecedented challenges in accessing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), have resulted in the deaths of 213 fire and EMS personnel thus far and the quarantine of thousands more. Repeated studies have shown that fire and EMS personnel can be up to 15 times more likely than the public to contract COVID-19 and are one of the most vulnerable classes of healthcare providers in terms of workplace exposures to COVID-19.
