3 displaced after fire in Peoria An early morning fire displaced three individuals in Peoria Wednesday. According to a Peoria Fire Department press release, firefighters observed heavy smoke and fire coming out of the rear of a home near Courtland Street and Idlewhile Drive at approximately 1:35 a.m. Fire crews made a quick and aggressive attack and had the fire under control by 2 a.m. The fire extended to an attic space and down a hall. Smoke and heat damage occurred throughout most of the second floor. Three residents and their pets all safely exited the home before firefighters arrived at the scene. A fire investigator determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and caused by the careless use of smoking materials. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damages. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Crews respond to garage fire in Quincy home Quincy firefighters responded to a fire early Wednesday morning. Crews arrived on scene around 12:20 a.m. at 1824 Golden Grove Street. Firefighters said the fire started in the garage and was put out within ten minutes upon arrival. They said that the garage sustained extensive damage, and the cause of the fire is unknown. They started putting out hot spots after the fire was contained. Chief Bernard Vahlkamp said below freezing temperatures present a challenge when putting out fires. "You can't let the water just sit because otherwise it'll start to freeze up inside of the hose and also inside of the valves" Vahlkamp said. Neighbor Logan Leonard said he had received a text from his friend that the neighbor's house was on fire, and was shocked to see the damage. WGEM-TV NBC 10 QUINCY East Peoria Fire Department receives donation from insurance company The East Peoria Fire Department will be able to purchase a much-needed upgrade thanks to a donation from a local insurance company. Country Financial donated $4,500 to the East Peoria Fire Department on Tuesday. The money will purchase a UTV skid, which is a utility terrain vehicle with an attachment that enables firefighters to transport patients from large events. "It's phenomenal. As a municipal fire department, there's always budgetary constraints, and it's an item that was a want and a need at the same time," said East Peoria Fire Chief Bobby Zimmerman. "You're always weighing where to better utilize your funds." Right now, they use an old golf cart that doesn't fit a cot, so firefighters are forced to move the patient twice. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA South Beloit Police, Fire Departments square off in blood drive Local hospitals are in desperate need of life-giving donations this time of year, and that is what inspired a friendly rivalry between first responders. The South Beloit Fire and Police Departments faced off in a "Battle of the Badges Blood Drive." People rolled up their sleeves all day Tuesday at the South Beloit Fire Department on Gardner Street. Police and firefighters partnered with the Rock River Valley Blood Center. Everyone who donated got to vote for either department. Whichever agency that earned the most votes by the end of the day got to take home a trophy. The drive was timed, because blood donations dip around the holidays. "This is a great opportunity to come out and give blood to the community, and most of the blood they pick up today stays in the community," said South Beloit Fire Chief Jason Griffin. VIDEO: Fire at Kentucky strip mall draws more than 50 firefighters to scene A fire that started in a strip mall early Wednesday morning drew more than 50 firefighters and a dozen fire engines to respond to the scene, according to the Louisville Fire Department. The firefighters were dispatched at 4:04 a.m. to a facility with an attached garage and multiple stores at S. 18th and W. Jefferson streets, Louisville Fire spokesperson Maj. Bobby Cooper said, in Louisville's Russell neighborhood. Officials had to call a second alarm on the blaze and were still on the scene after 7 a.m. in a defensive operation, hitting the fire with water from the outside instead of the inside. "The building will be a total loss," Cooper added. Cooper said the building is owned by SKS Tax Service. At least three businesses were housed at the strip mall – Fire & Desire (a restaurant), Kendrick's Kuts (a barbershop) and Hip Hop Sweet Shop (a bakery). COURIER JOURNAL - METERED SITE Fire department in Oklahoma moves to new physical test in employment process VIDEO: The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) has updated their physical ability test for any candidate who wants to be a part of the department. It's a test of physical and mental strength, and it must be passed before candidates can move on to the interview portion of the process. Up until January 2022, TFD did a candidate physical ability test of its own, but now the Oklahoma State Firefighter's Pension Board requires every department in the state to align with these tests. Tulsa Fire Chief of Staff Chad Miller said in a statement they are already seeing positive results. He said in part, "We saw fewer issues with the cadets of this last class being able to perform physically." KOKI-TV FOX 23 TULSA ‘It Rained Oil': Remembering the Explosive 1958 Hancock Refinery Fire in California PHOTOS: It was May 22, 2:00 p.m., I'm 9 years old, waiting on a Thursday afternoon for the school day to end. I've lived my whole— short —life in Lakewood, a new suburb incorporated in 1954. There are square miles of the same kind of neighborhood in every direction. I rode my bike to school and will ride it back. After school, I'll watch black-and-white "Popeye" cartoons with their bewildering 1930s cultural references. People say I live in suburbia, where the routines of family life are everything and nothing ever happens. The history of oil complicates those clichés. Oil from fields in a wide band from Newport Beach though Long Beach to the Baldwin Hills powered the industrialization of Los Angeles and transformed the city in the 1920s. Even in 1958, the region's oil fields are among the most productive on the West Coast.
