Former Kankakee fire chief David St. John dies Former Kankakee Fire Chief David St. John, a member of the department for nearly 30 years, died early Monday following a short battle with cancer. St. John was the city fire chief from May 1993 through June 1996. When he retired from the department in 1996, he concluded a 27-year career. St. John was 75. Funeral services are pending at the Jenson Funeral Home. St. John was appointed chief when Mayor Donald Green took office in 1993. He was also known as someone who wore his emotions on his sleeve and as someone who was entirely devoted to the fire service. "Fire service was his life," his daughter, Sheri Schimisek said Monday. "It was absolutely his life. He lived, ate and drank fire service. It was his true passion." Hired on Dec. 2, 1969, St. John rose through the ranks within the department. He was promoted to lieutenant in September 1977 and captain in July 1984. DAILY JOURNAL Update: DeKalb City Council approves firefighter union contract City Council members unanimously approved a four-year contract between the city and the DeKalb firefighter union at Monday's meeting. The contract between the city and DeKalb International Association of Firefighters Local 1236 addresses staffing levels at the fire department and includes no pay increases in 2021, according to the Dec. 28 agenda. Union President Noah Mallard said the contract would "forever change public service and safety" in the community. "[The contract] will change how we are able to operate at EMS calls, fire incidents, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials responses, technical rescue emergencies or whatever the citizens call for," Mallard said. The current minimum staffing level at the fire department is 13 firefighters, according to the agenda. Low staffing numbers are affecting the rising call volume in relation to COVID-19 to perform emergency medical services. NORTHERN STAR ONLINE 2 injured, several families displaced after Rolling Meadows condo fire A resident and a firefighter were injured in a Rolling Meadows condominium fire early Tuesday morning that displaced 18 families. Witnesses describe a frantic effort to stop the fire at approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, at a large condominium complex on the 2400 block of West Algonquin Road. "The husband was in the window with his own hands, trying with his own hands breaking the windows and trying to put the fire out," neighbor Theresa Carrillo said of one resident. Carrillo added that the man's wife was panicked that her dogs were trapped inside. She suffered smoke inhalation in an effort to save them. Both the woman and a firefighter were treated at Northwest Community Hospital, and are both in stable condition. Rolling Meadows firefighters moved quickly to contain the ferocious blaze to single 18-unit building, proved more difficult by evacuating the condos make sure no one was trapped inside. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Fires Kill 2 Men Over Christmas Weekend In Elgin A string of fires in Elgin claimed two lives over Christmas weekend, according to fire officials. A man died on Christmas Eve after firefighters pulled him from his burning home earlier that morning, according to a news release. Officials have not yet identified the man. The fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the 40 block of Creekside Circle, according to the release. Firefighters searched the home and took a man to Advocate Sherman Hospital, where he later died, the release states. The Thursday morning fire was the first of five blazes the Elgin Fire Department was called to between Christmas Eve and the end of the holiday weekend. The flames caused about $300,000 in damage to four units, with several families unable to return to their homes, according to the release. ELGIN PATCH Vacant Peoria house catches fire Peoria Firefighter/Paramedics responded Tuesday around noon to reports of a house fire at 1614 S. Easton Ave. According to Battalion Chief Nathaniel Rice, a large amount of fire was found in the porch area of the residence when crews arrived. With so much fire on the front porch area, Rice said it made knocking down the fire more difficult. "When you're trying to make entry into a structure and you've got flames all around the front door, it's pretty hard to get through that and get into the house before you can get much done," said Rice. "Crews had to spend a little bit of time getting that amount of fire on the front porch extinguished before they were able to actually get inside." When they did get inside, crews found the fire was extended beyond the porch into the attic space. A fire investigator is still determining what caused the fire, but reports from neighbors told Rice that homeless people occupied the house on occasion. WMBD-AM 1470 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters spend hours battling blaze at recycling plant in Florida VIDEO: Large piles of scrap metal caught fire at an Opa-locka recycling plant, sending heavy plumes of smoke into the sky. The firefight, which began around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trademark Metals Recycling Plant, stretched well into the evening. Firefighters said because of the metal that is burning, these type of fires take a long time to put out. 23 units were working to extinguish the fire they said is deeply seated in a large mound of metal. Below the junk pile, the core of the combustion made the fire fight even more challenging. Crews were forced to use foam trucks, but because of the junk yard's layout, just accessing the fire acted as a task in itself. The recycling plant is not new to dealing with fires. Back in January, the same facility dealt with another fire. While crews were able to put out those flames quickly, Tuesday's fire has proven to be much more difficult. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI Ambulances left waiting hours to drop off patients at hospitals in Tennessee, firefighters' union says Some ambulances have been forced to wait as long as 12 hours outside Memphis hospitals to drop off patients, according to the Memphis Fire Fighters Association. The problem appears to be tied to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, which has brought many hospitals to capacity. Tuesday afternoon, the Memphis Fire Department confirmed ambulances were backed up at St. Francis' Park Avenue location as well as at Methodist South, where the wait time was reportedly an hour long. "I wish it was an hour ‘cause it's a lot longer than an hour that they've been waiting. We've had them wait as long as 10, 12 hours," said Thomas Malone, president of the Memphis Fire Fighters Association which also represents paramedics. Malone said ambulance wait times began building in early December –- around the same time COVID cases spiked. He worries to long waits will prevent ambulances from responding to emergencies. At a single hospital, he said 14 ambulances were waiting to drop off patients one day. WREG-TV CBS 3 MEMPHIS Burglary at fire station in Washington results in $50K loss, slows response time A burglary and theft of $50,000 worth of firefighting and emergency equipment at a Woodland fire station could temporarily slow emergency services to the nearby rural community, fire officials said Tuesday. Cowlitz County Fire District 1 Assistant Chief Bob Kofstad said volunteers with the station discovered the break-in Monday, Dec. 28, while checking on Station 3 at 120 Woodland Heights Rd. The station is not staffed every day and does not have surveillance cameras, so the exact date of the burglary is unknown, Kofstad said. The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, Kofstad said. Deputies could not be reached Tuesday to provide additional details about the investigation. Kofstad said that the suspected burglars broke in through the back of the station by ripping out an exterior wall and kicking down the interior wall. LONGVIEW DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Massachusetts Firefighters Union Frustrated By Delays In COVID Vaccine Distribution Firefighters in Massachusetts are sounding the alarm about delays in COVID-19 vaccinations for first responders. On Tuesday, Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, the statewide union, posted on Twitter claiming the state has "no viable plan" to vaccinate local firefighters. The union president says the union learned the state planned to place the responsibility for distributing vaccines to first responders on local city and town boards of health. "The local boards of health have been overworked, a lot of them are understaffed especially in smaller communities," Rich Mackinnon, MFFA President, told WBZ. Mackinnon said that more than 800 firefighters statewide currently have COVID-19, and another 650 are quarantined due to exposure. WBZ-TV CBS 4 BOSTON Related: Do U.S. Firefighter Medics Get Early COVID-19 Vaccines? Depends on the State U.S. emergency medical personnel are getting quick access to COVID-19 vaccines in some parts of the United States while fire chiefs in other areas forecast a delay of weeks or months, highlighting the chaotic nature of a rollout that relies on states and counties to plan and administer distribution. A lack of detailed federal guidelines has forced U.S. states and counties to create their own plans for distributing initially limited doses of COVID-19 vaccines in hopes of curbing a raging pandemic that has killed more than 332,000 Americans. All states have prioritized nursing homes and frontline healthcare workers, following federal guidelines. But the federal plan does not define frontline health workers, and local decisions sometimes differ on whether the United State's roughly 430,000 emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, are included.
