Orland Park house fire leaves firefighter injured VIDEO/PHOTOS: An Orland Park firefighter was injured in a house fire early Tuesday morning. The residents of the home in the 14700 block of Holly Court were awakened by their smoke alarms at 3:30 a.m. One of the occupants was able to escape out the back of the home while the other had to crawl out the front due to an injury from the fire. A firefighter was working to put out the blaze in the back of the home when they were injured. The first responder was taken to Silver Cross Hospital. "Every day, every week, every month and every year, 24-7, our firefighters put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of our residents," Orland Park Protection District Board President John Brudnak said. The fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes. The firefighter who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital was released without major injuries. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO VIDEO: Fire out at Lakeview apartment building, no injuries reported, Chicago Fire Department says The Chicago Fire Department battled a large apartment fire in the city's Lakeview neighborhood Tuesday evening. CFD officials said the fire started shortly before 5:15 p.m. in the rear-porches of a three-story residential building on Wellington near Broadway. Flames could be seen shooting out of windows, through the roof and out of the porch. The fire was struck out around 5:35 p.m. "We were playing Lego and I heard an explosion and flames came out. Obviously grabbed the kids and ran out the door," said Angela Woodall, who lives in the building. Woodall scooped up her toddlers and they fled with just the clothes on their backs. "We came out here and my little daughter didn't have her trousers on and they wrapped her up and got her all warm," Woodall said, clearly shaken. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: Flames tear through cottage in Pennsylvania PHOTOS: "A little bit of smoke to start with and I said that looks funny and then it burst into flames," said Harrison Leuckel. The longtime resident first spotted the fire around 1:55 p.m. Tuesday in the now-burned down cabin, located within the Waldheim Park church-owned community. Smoke could be seen for miles but luckily the flames didn't spread in this mostly seasonal community of 82 cabins covering 40 acres along South Mountain. 15 live there full-time, including Kathy Walck, who said the cottage was empty. "What did you think when you saw the flames?" I asked. "I was very surprised, I could see them from my cottage," Walck said. At least half a dozen fire crews were called in, mainly due to the need for tanker trucks to supply water. The recent snow and curvy roads also made getting to the scene a challenge. WFMZ-TV 69 ALLENTOWN Related: Ground and air video shows two-alarm house fire in Pennsylvania Alabama firefighters: New schedule change improving fire operation VIDEO: Firefighters who work for Decatur Fire and Rescue have operated on different schedule since early 2024. The previous schedule had firefighters working 24 hour shifts, before having 48 hours off. The new schedule has firefighters work 48 hours straight, before having 96 hours off. Decatur Fire Deputy Chief Nathan Springer said the move was requested by firefighters in 2023, and has already improved fire operation since. "We've not had any true negative feedback," he said. "Even from some of our department members who were apprehensive about the change, they have reported being pleasantly surprised with the rest they're getting in their off time, and reporting to work more well rested." Springer said the scheduling model allows firefighters to spend more time with their families, and have more time off. WAFF-TV NBC 48 HUNTSVILLE Texas brewery releases 'Great Fire' beer to commemorate 1911 fire PHOTOS: In commemoration of a 1911 fire that helped shape Conroe's history, Fass Brewing on the downtown square has released a special beer. Fass Brewing launched its first Rauchbier called "The Great Fire" this week commemorating the Feb. 21, 1911 anniversary of the fire that decimated the east side of the courthouse square. Conroe's big fire of Feb. 21, 1911 was so significant to the town, it is the subject of a Texas State Historical Marker downtown and its still being commemorated 113 years later. It has been said that a cold front had come through town the night of Feb. 21 and during the night fire broke out in the upstairs of a drug store on the eastern side of the courthouse. At the time, nearly all the structures in downtown were made of wood. HOUSTON CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Fire rescue chaplain in New Mexico writes song on destigmatizing firefighter mental health VIDEO: According to the National Fallen Firefighters Association, around 100 U.S. firefighters die by suicide each year. As head chaplain for Albuquerque Fire Rescue, this is the reality David Meyers faces in his line of work. "We see lots of things. We experience lots of things. People tend to think firefighters are big, bad, tough, and strong. While they are, we are also human," Meyers said. Meyers provides education, support and resources to fellow firefighters who may be struggling with their mental health. His experiences and the loss he has faced inspired him to write the song, "Ropes." "We had a loss in our department a few years back. And there's other departments, you know, around the country that have suffered the same," Meyers said. Mental health and suicide are often stigmatized, he says. He also never thought he'd put that into song.
