Residents displaced after apartment fire in Washington A fire in Washington kept local firefighters busy Tuesday morning. WMBD spoke to Matthew Dettore, a resident of the apartment, who lives there with his son and their cat. Dettore said their power went out Monday night, and at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday, their neighbor woke them up and alerted them about the fire. Dettore said he and his son both were able to exit the building, but they were unable to find their cat. Washington Fire Chief Brett Brown said the fire happened at the building on N. High St. and took about an hour to get under control. Currently, the chief does not know where the fire originated, but the best guess is in the upstairs attic area. All residents were able to get out safely, and crews were expected to be on scene for a few hours to put out any hot spots. Brown said the apartment is a complete loss and the residents are now displaced. The Red Cross has been contacted to offer assistance. WMBD-TV PEORIA Northwestern donates second fire engine to Evanston Fire Department Northwestern donated $800,000 to Evanston in December to fund the purchase of a new fire engine. The fire engine will be the second purchased from University-donated funds. In 2009, NU donated $550,000 to the city for the purchase of a new pumper engine, which is still in service. Ald. Clare Kelly (1st) negotiated with the University for the contribution alongside lifelong Evanston residents Dave Ellis and Jack Mortell, who studied similar universities' contributions to their host cities. "This contribution will help all residents in Evanston and help the Evanston Fire Department to continue to provide the excellent services that we count on," Kelly said in a news release. "This is a great step toward building on a true collaborative relationship between Northwestern and the city." Mayor Daniel Biss thanked University President Morton Schapiro for his investment in the city's health and public safety. VIDEO: Burning wall collapses, nearly hits firefighter in Missouri A section of a wall collapsed in Lincoln County just feet away from where firefighters were battling an early morning blaze Tuesday. The Winfield-Foley Fire Department responded to the house fire around 7 a.m. in the 500 block of Highway Y. The fire caused the front stone veneer wall to collapse and nearly strike one of the firefighters. FOX 2's Bommarito Automotive Group SkyFOX helicopter flew over the scene. The video shows Mark Lodes, a battalion chief and volunteer firefighter, walking away as the burning wall came crumbling down. Lodes said he warned other firefighters to evacuate moments before the collapse. "I could hear it crackling and said the wall is coming down," said Lodes. "As we were walking around to the front, I could hear that sound that the wall was going to collapse. It was three to four seconds. I hollered that the wall was coming down." KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Millions of Jeeps and Rams are about to get a lifesaving new safety feature As many as 4 million drivers are about to become safer, thanks to an over-the-air software update Stellantis will send to their vehicles — at no cost — in January. The Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles will receive alerts when they near an emergency vehicle with its flashers lit. The feature, called the Emergency Vehicle Alert System (EVAS), will initially be available in North America, but Stellantis could roll it out across the 14 brands the automaker sells around the world. A record 63 U.S. emergency responders were killed in crashes last year, according to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. "It's all about saving lives," said Mamatha Chamarthi, Stellantis head of software business and product management. The feature was born in a 2020 meeting where Chrysler group employees pitch new ideas. DETROIT FREE PRESS - METERED SITE 13 People, Including 7 Kids, Die in Fire That Tore Through Pennsylvania Rowhome At least 13 people, including children, died as a quick-moving fire tore through a crowded Philadelphia rowhome converted into two apartments owned by the city's public housing authority in the Fairmount neighborhood early Wednesday. "This is without a doubt one of the most tragic days in our city's history, the loss of so many people in such a tragic way," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said with tears in his eyes. The fire began around 6:40 a.m. on the second floor of the rowhome duplex along the 800 block of North 23rd Street, at Ogden Street, in the dense residential neighborhood, Philadelphia police and fire officials said. The house is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, according to city records. At least 13 people, including seven children, died and two others, including a child, were left in critical condition. The number of dead could still rise, officials said. WCAU-TV NBC 10 PHILADELPHIA January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month Occupational cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters, surpassing heart disease. January is "Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month." The International Association of Fire Fighters and the Fire Fighters Cancer Support Network are teaming up to reduce the impact of cancer on firefighters with education and prevention resources for departments across the nation and here in North Carolina. "It starts with education, and so the education that the International Association of Firefighters is providing for us is very important and very valuable," said Asheville Fire Chief Scott Burnette. Asheville firefighters are also focused on preventing, tracking, and detecting cancers impacting firefighters. According to Chief Burnette, the department is working to better track exposures by providing diaries for firefighters, helping them track exposures over their careers. WMYA-TV 40 ANDERSON More than 1 million Americans diagnosed with COVID over the long holiday weekend The U.S. reported a record 1,082,549 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. It's the latest in a series of staggering milestones brought on by the highly transmissible omicron variant, which is sweeping across the U.S. and around the world. The U.S. has broken several of its own COVID-19 records in recent days. Last week, Johns Hopkins reported more than 480,000 new cases in a single day, more than double the number of daily cases reported during the peak of the delta surge. The seven-day average topped 280,000. For reference: The country was averaging about 70,000 cases a day in early November. Monday's rise could be due to delays in reporting over the holidays and probably includes tests conducted over the weekend. The 7-day daily average for infections is currently at 480,273 per day.
