Peoria Fire Chief Sollberger says department's new apprenticeship program dovetails into recruitment efforts Striving to address lingering concerns about staffing, the Peoria Fire Department is launching a new apprenticeship program aimed at growing interest in firefighting careers among teenagers and young adults. Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger says the apprenticeships are basically a revival of the department's cadet program that was scrapped during budget cuts in 2019. "Since that time, we've really challenged ourselves trying to get this program back in place," said Sollberger. "The reason why we changed the name of it is, as professional firefighters you're a skilled laborer and every skilled labor program has an apprenticeship program. So we twisted it up a little bit from a cadet program to an apprenticeship program. WCBU-FM 89.9 PEORIA New study shows fentanyl deaths in children have increased, but not in Sangamon County The number of children overdosing has tripled over the last two years. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Governor Pritzker Proclaims January 16-22 Community Risk Reduction Week in Illinois The State of Illinois Community Risk Reduction Task Force announced that Governor JB Pritzker has proclaimed this week Community Risk Reduction Week. The goal is to raise awareness among the fire service that implementing risk reduction concepts will make communities and department safer. The idea originated with individuals from various fire departments across the country. Every 23 seconds, a fire department in the United States responds to a fire somewhere in the nation, causing an estimated $15.9 billion in property damage. "Through the work of the State of Illinois CRR Task Force conducting and compiling the statewide risk assessment, valuable data is now available pinpointing not only statewide risks, but more localized risks that we can now work with our partners to help mitigate making communities safer across the state through programs like Be Alarmed," said Acting Illinois State Fire Marshal Dale Simpson. WGLC-FM 100.1 MENDOTAT Follow-up: Peoria Police investigate central Illinois Planned Parenthood fire as arson A fire at a central Illinois Planned Parenthood clinic is being investigated as arson, Peoria police said Tuesday, just days after the state enacted sweeping abortion protections. Officers responded to a report of an "unknown person throwing a Molotov cocktail" into the Peoria clinic building at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police spokesperson Semone Roth said. Peoria police and fire officials are investigating the blaze, and no suspects have been identified or arrests made, Roth said. The incident occurred two days after Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law reproductive health care legislation to protect out-of-state abortion seekers, adding Illinois to the list of states that have placed legal reinforcements around the procedure after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. WMBF-TV NBC 32 MYRTLE BEACH Fallen FDNY firefighter saves 5 lives, including 2 FDNY firefighters, through organ donation: 'His legacy' A New York City Fire Department firefighter who was fatally injured while prepping for a training exercise at work saved the lives of five others through organ donation, including two fellow FDNY firefighters. Veteran Firefighter William "Billy" Moon died after a 20-foot fall at his Brooklyn fire station on Dec. 12 left him with a severe head injury. Moon was an organ donor and his heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys went to five people. One of those people was retired FDNY Lt. Terrence Jordan, 64, who developed a 9/11-related illness after responding to the World Trade Center and needed new lungs, Long Island News 12 reported. Jordan had end-stage COPD and emphysema. "I was in such bad shape from one moment. And now I look at myself and it's like I have a new lease on life because of the Moon family," said Jordan, who might have died without the donation. FOX NEWS North Carolina first responders blazing new trail with fire engine party bus VIDEO/PHOTOS: Two local first responders are setting the downtown Asheville scene on ‘fire'. Technically retired, Tanker 364 is now blazing a new trail in western North Carolina. It's not your typical fire engine anymore. Tanker 364 has been transformed into the ‘Hot Zone Party Fire Engine' – the brainchild of Terry Whitaker and Dakota Andrews. "This is a C-8000 Ford tanker from Lattimore Fire Department," Whitaker said. "It cost us, I think it was about $5,000 for this truck, then we've got several thousand more invested in all the sound equipment and all the modifications." The pair didn't stray far from their first responder roots when searching for a side hustle; they're both firefighters. "It just gives us a chance to interact with the public in a completely different atmosphere," Andrews said. WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE ‘Kraken' COVID Variant, XBB.1.5 Climbing in Midwest, Experts Say More Cases Expected The new and highly contagious COVID variant dubbed XBB.1.5 roughly doubled its prevalence in the Midwest over the last week and experts say that growth will likely continue in the weeks ahead. The variant now makes up 43% of cases in the U.S. and more than 14% of cases in the Midwest, climbing in both metrics from 30.4% and roughly 7% the week prior, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The growth isn't unexpected as the omicron subvariant has been described as one of the most contagious variants of the pandemic so far. Experts in the Chicago area have been preparing for the variant to surge in the Midwest after the Northeast saw a rapid rise, with the variant now making up more than 80% of cases there. "I do expect that [XBB.1.5] will continue to increase here," Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said Tuesday. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
