5 hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak in Chicago's Humboldt Park apartment Five people are sent to the hospital following a carbon monoxide leak inside an apartment Wednesday morning in the Humboldt Park Neighborhood. Fire crews responded to the residence, in the 1600 block of North Keystone Avenue, where CO levels peaked over 350 ppm. The Chicago Fire Department said a man went to work with symptoms of CO poisoning. His boss took him back to the residence where other family members were found unresponsive. Three of the victims were transported to a local hospital in good condition and two others in serious condition. Several others have refused treatment. There is no word on the age and gender of the victims. Fire officials are reminding people to make sure they have a working CO detector in their homes. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO 4 people, including 2 Chicago police officers, hospitalized after car crash Four people were hospitalized, including two Chicago police officers, after a car crash in East Garfield Park Tuesday evening. As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, the two officers were in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital Tuesday night. But the given the condition of their wrecked squad car, there was no doubt they were very fortunate to have walked away from the scene. A marked Chicago Police vehicle was traveling west on Harrison Street and crossing California Avenue around 7:23 p.m. The scene is less than about half a mile from the Harrison (11th) District police station and Area 4 Headquarters, 3151 W. Harrison St. The squad car struck a box truck that was headed east on Harrison Street, police said. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Fire in Evanston displaces six residents A fire on the second floor of a two-story multi-residential building at 2002 Emerson St. displaced six residents Tuesday. The Evanston Fire Department responded at approximately 4:50 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire and called in neighboring fire departments for assistance. The fire was extinguished in less than 30 minutes, and EFD is still investigating the cause of the fire. Six residents of the building were displaced due to smoke and water damage. Two received medical care and one was transported to a local area hospital. American Red Cross personnel provided emergency services and housing assistance to the displaced residents, according to the fire department. THE DAILY NORTHWESTERN Illinois State Fire Marshal urges people to check heating equipment this winter As we reach the halfway point of winter, The Illinois State Fire Marshal encourages residents to check heating equipment to ensure it works. Also, during that process, the fire marshal recommends checking smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. That advice comes as the National Fire Protection reports that heating is the second largest cause of home fires and injuries. Also, it is the third leading cause of home fire-related deaths. In 2021, Illinois fire departments responded to 20,000 calls about carbon monoxide. Within that number, 10,000 of those were able to determine a leak. Also, the fire marshal gave insight into what symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Those symptoms resemble the flu, including headache, fatigue, and shortness of breath. VIDEO: 16-year-old boy injured during house fire in California, 1 other person sent to hospital A 16-year-old boy was injured Tuesday night during a house fire in the Sunland-Tujunga area, authorities said. The fire was reported at around 9:16 p.m. at the home on Sherman Grove Avenue. When firefighters arrived, the fire was coming from the garage, exposing neighboring homes to flames. Firefighters found the boy outside with burns and injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. An additional person, whose identity was not released, was rushed to the hospital in "fair condition," the fire department said. Firefighters were also alerted of reports stating propane tanks may have been inside the home, but it's unclear if anything was found. The majority of the fire damage to the home was to the attached garage and its attic. AIR7 HD captured smoke billowing from the building as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Firefighters worry about chemicals in their gear, but alternatives could present problems too Firefighter Jason Burns appreciates the attention that firefighting foam has received recently because long term exposure to it has been linked to cancer. However, he says he's rarely used firefighting foam in his nearly 20-year career. "I tend to focus on our gear because most fire departments aren't using foam on a regular basis, whereas I'm using my gear, firefighters are using our gear 10-14 times a tour, which is what we call our day of work," he said. Burns' "turnout gear" is the heavy, multilayered set of clothes that protects firefighters from heat, water and other liquids such as hot oils encountered while responding to an emergency. Several layers of the gear — usually the outermost layer and an inner moisture barrier — are coated with PFAS, which efficiently repels liquids while allowing for breathability. NORTH CAROLINA HEALTH NEWS Michigan firefighters use special tool for electric vehicle fires VIDEO: Car fires are nothing new -- but electric car fires are different. Now, the Shelby Township Fire Department has a new tool that saves time -- when putting out the flames. The key is a giant fire blanket for the very specific type of fire. "These were bought specifically to help us in the event of an electric vehicle fire," said Lt. Robert Muylaert, Shelby Township Fire. As more EVs hit the road, fire departments must be prepared for the potential of things to go wrong. "We'd rather have something prepared in advance, than wait for the disaster to happen," he said. A typical car fire can be extinguished in minutes, but electric cars burn differently. "It can take four to five hours to extinguish a battery fire and after that, once it gets to a tow yard, they have had those fires reignite - even two to three days afterward," Muylaert said. WJBK-TV FOX 2 DETROIT Commentary: EMS workers from throughout Idaho attend EMS Day at Statehouse Updating Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Idaho is no small task, but I was grateful for the opportunity to join my EMS colleagues to discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Idaho. EMS workers from throughout the state — as far away as Boundary County — traveled to Boise on Monday to help make a difference on behalf of the communities they serve. Paramedics, EMTs, air medical personnel, EMS and Fire department leadership, hospital staff, and many others joined me at the Idaho Statehouse. While their specific training and missions vary, they attended EMS Day for one purpose: to help educate lawmakers and Idaho residents about the challenges ahead. They explained that EMS services in Idaho are faced with population growth, a fragmented system of volunteers and paid staff, and Idaho's inherently rural character.
