House Fire, Possible Explosion, Injures 5 People In Evanston A house fire left five people injured in Evanston Tuesday night. The Evanston Fire Department responded to the house on Brown Avenue after a call came in for an explosion. The Evanston fire chief said based on the scene, it did not look like the fire started in a natural way. However, officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire. Five people were rescued from the house and treated for injuries. A witness said he initially thought he heard thunder, but went outside and heard a mother calling for help from the house. He said the mother was trying to escape out the window and handed him a child. Officials are investigating. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Related: Evanston explosion, fire at home leaves 3 hurt; did not happen naturally, investigators say Quincy fire chief receives Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award The United Way of Adams County and the Rotary Club of Quincy recognized Quincy Fire Chief Joe Henning as the recipient of its 24th annual Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award on Tuesday. The award was named after Joe Bonansinga, the first recipient, who was known as "Mr. Quincy" for his years of community service and his desire to serve others. Todd Lamison, who nominated Henning, said he has been with the Rotary Club for many years and has volunteered for the United Way and when he thinks of "Mr. Quincy," he thinks of Henning because of how much he cares about Quincy and how hard he works to make it a better place. "Joe stands out because he's so involved with so many different organizations," Lamison said. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG Brookfield house fire under investigation A home at 4401 Vernon Ave. in Brookfield sustained extensive interior fire and smoke damage after a blaze ignited there at about 2:50 p.m. on June 8. Brookfield Fire Capt. Bob Shamasko told the Landmark a little less than two hours after the alarm call came in that no one appears to have been home at the time of the fire but that investigators were still making sure that was the case. "I can't verify that at this time," Shamasko said. Neighbor Marie LeGros said she learned of the fire after hearing fire engines roaring up to the scene. She said she went outside and saw smoke pouring out of a second-floor window on the north side of the home, which sits on the southeast corner of Vernon and Congress Park avenues, across the street from Ehlert Park. RIVERSIDE BROOKFIELD LANDMARK Grant will buy new air packs for Lincoln Rural Firefighters Members of the Lincoln Rural Fire Department were the recipients of the Assistance to Firefighter Grant that is replacing all air packs that were nearing their service life. Each air pack costs nearly $13,000 each and in total was about $146,000 in grant money. According to Chris Buse, chief of LRFD, this grant has helped supply firefighters with the proper tools. "This is something that the district could not have afforded without the funding from AFG. During the application process Congessman Darin LaHood wrote us a letter of support and we are grateful for his assistance. We would also like to thank MES and 3M Scott Fire & Safety for working with us to make sure we were able to get exactly what we needed," said Buse. LINCOLN COURIER Chicago: Key City Panel Endorses Plan to Build Boys & Girls Club at Redesigned Police, Fire Training Academy Members of a key city panel unanimously backed Mayor Lori Lightfoot's plan to build a new Boys & Girls Club as part of a redesigned police and fire training academy that has been at the center of a ferocious controversy for nearly four years. The vote by the Community Development Commission sends the proposal to the City Council's Housing and Real Estate Committee, which could consider the matter later this month before a final vote of the City Council. The mayor's proposal calls for the city to rent the land for the two-story, 18,000-square-foot facility to the Boys & Girls Club for $1 per year for 55 years, with two 10-year options to extend the lease. ..The training facility will include classrooms, labs, simulators, conference rooms, an auditorium and offices as well as a shooting range and space for "active scenario training and a dive training pool." The campus will also include a driving course, skid pad and a place for "hands-on practice in real-world situations." WTTW-TV PBS 11 CHICAGO After truck breaks down, Addison firefighters hose down chickens to keep them cool in the heat After truck breaks down, Addison firefighters hose down chickens to keep them cool in the heat After truck breaks down, A truck carrying 14,000 chickens broke down in the heat. The firefighters' quick thinking saved many of the birds. Hosing down chickens is not really in the job description, but that is exactly what happened on Tuesday – and because of it, thousands of little lives were spared. "Things happen in Chicago. Out here in Addison, we save chickens," Mansfield said. The chickens became very hot as the weather has been warm as of late. "They were trying to use a garden hose to keep them cool, that's all they had. So he did all the right things, he just didn't have the right tools," Mansfield said. Oregon resort a total loss after fire spreads rapidly through the building VIDEO: On Tuesday morning, firefighters responded to a fire at Galice Resort, the iconic restaurant and store situated along the Rogue River to the northwest of Merlin. Austin Prince from Rural Metro Fire confirmed to NewsWatch 12 that the structure was "fully involved," as firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire. The agency later posted an update, saying that people should avoid the area to prevent congestion as fire crews work on the major fire incident. According to fire officials at the scene, the building is a total loss. Some of the rafts and nearby vehicles were salvaged from the fire, but the building itself and most of its contents were destroyed. Mary Lou Thomason told NewsWatch 12 that her daughter, and now owner of Galice Resort Debbie Thomason, was working at the Resort when the fire began, although she did not see what caused it. This year, Fire Prevention Week is recognized from October 3 through 9 and seeks to better educate the public about the sounds of smoke alarms, what they mean, and how to respond to them. According to an NFPA report, working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half. The same report, entitled "Smoke Alarms in the U.S.," stated 41% of household fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarm or 16% in homes with alarms that failed to activate. "Smoke alarms have played a leading role in reducing fire death rates over the past 40 years, but we still have more work to do in maximizing their effectiveness," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. WHNT-TV CBS 19 HUNTSVILLE North Carolina teen saves local fire department after raising $20k during Eagle Scout project A Tarboro 16-year-old raised more than $22,000 for his local volunteer fire department as part of a project to become an Eagle Scout. If it wasn't for Will Wooten's hard work, leaders of the Heartsease Volunteer Fire Department said they wouldn't be able to fight fires safely. "I was not expecting this at all," Wooten said. "It's just a really great thing." This spring, a service project was all that stood between Wooten and the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest level in the Boy Scouts of America organization. The project would need to make an impact in Wooten's community, and his father came to him with an idea. "We were kind of thinking about ideas on what to do for the project, and he said Heartsease is really struggling right now," Wooten said. WRAL-TV NBC 5 RALEIGH New York: Firefighters union decries delay getting ambulance for injured firefighter Monday night, a fire tore through the upper floors of a building on Greig Street; two people were in the home at the time and were taken to area hospitals. A firefighter was also taken for treatment and is on the mend. The Firefighters Association said they had to wait over seven minutes to get an ambulance for a firefighter suffering from a rapid pulse and heat exhaustion, the delay they say is unacceptable. The City of Rochester said Tuesday, the firefighter was treated on-scene and the transport wasn't an issue, ambulances were there. "They realized that he needed to go to the hospital and we didn't have an ambulance," says Eddie Santiago, President of the Rochester Firefighter's Association. He says this is not about the EMTs, he says they do a phenomenal job. ROCHESTER FIRST Firefighters Launch Fundraiser To Bring Historic Fire Truck Back To Oklahoma VIDEO: An Oklahoma fire department is working hard to rescue "The Spirit Of Oklahoma," a fire truck sent to New York City to help with 9/11 recovery. Now that it's up for sale, the Calera Fire Department is doing everything it can to buy it and bring it home. The clock is ticking as a bright red badge of brotherhood between Oklahoma and New York firefighters – with a history spanning 26 years - could be lost in just 10 days. In 1995, ten New York firefighters came to the rescue following the Oklahoma City Bombing. Those same ten men lost their lives in the September 11th attacks. Seeing the aftermath, a Fort Gibson school saw a need - and filled it. Students raised nearly half a million dollars and bought a new fire truck. Dubbed the 'Spirit of Oklahoma,' it was sent to spend the rest of its days in New York City but recently it was sold at an auction. KOTV-DT CBS 6 TULSA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
