People living in parts of Morris had to evacuate Tuesday because of an industrial fire involving lithium ion batteries, and the evacuation has been deemed mandatory for 24 hours. At 11:42 a.m. Tuesday, the Morris Fire Department was called to the 900 block of East Benton Street for a fire at the old Federal Paper Board building, which was being used to store a large quantity of lithium batteries. The company now at the building called Superior Battery and there were about 80 to 100 tons of batteries on the premises. According to authorities, the evacuation was prompted by lithium batteries catching fire, which produces smoke with dangerous particulates. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Decatur fire crews respond to fire on Thunderbird Drive VIDEO/PHOTOS: A fire in the 2200 block of West Thunderbird Drive is under investigation. Decatur fire crews responded to the structure fire at approximately 3 p.m. Monday. One firefighter was transported by the Decatur Ambulance Service to a local hospital for issues related to overheating. According to a news release issued by Deputy Fire Chief Jim Ohl, the first arriving units found heavy fire conditions coming from the garage and attic areas. They pulled lines for a quick fire attack. "The first arriving ladder truck worked on ventilating the roof and controlling the gas and electric into the structure," the release stated. "The fire quickly spread into the remaining attic space, causing significant structural instability and collapse." No other injuries were reported. HERALD & REVIEW Lake, McHenry County Fire Departments Get Grants Gov. J.B. Pritzker said his administration has awarded $3.3 million for small equipment grants to fire departments throughout the state, including multiple in Lake and McHenry counties. The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) awarded 149 fire departments and EMS providers across the state with money from the 2021 Small Equipment Grant Program. The OSFM received 448 applications requesting around $10.5 million in funding for this grant period. "First responders put their lives on the line every single day to do the critical work of protecting Illinois' communities. I am pleased to award $3.3 million in small equipment grants to 149 fire departments and EMS providers throughout the state, providing critical funding that will enable the purchase of new firefighting and ambulance equipment," Pritzker said. GRAYSLAKE PATCH Chicago firefighters stage fireworks safety demonstration With the 4th of July just days away, safety officials want to remind everyone just how dangerous fireworks can be. Five children have already been treated at Comer Children's Hospital for fireworks injuries. The most recent was an 11-year-old child hit in the chest by a bottle rocket. "It is not worth the risk of harming a child in your care, trust me you do not want to spend the Fourth of July weekend with your family in the emergency room," said Dr. Princy George, UChicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital. The Chicago Fire Department staged a live demonstration outside UChicago Comer Children's Hospital Tuesday morning. Even in the pouring rain, all it took was a touch of the sparkler for a t-shirt to catch fire. "I hope and pray that the message and warnings today will be taken to heart, fireworks are dangerous and illegal," said Cmsr. Annette Nance-Holt, Chicago Fire Dept. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Oswego Students Learn Hands-On With Fire, Police Departments For a week starting June 21, 21 junior high students were the "newest recruits" at the Oswego Public Safety Campus. Before their week of hands-on learning with firefighters and police officers, each student was given an academy t-shirt to don as their uniform. The Oswego Junior Public Safety Academy, the third one so far, gives junior high students a peek into the lives of firefighters and police officers. The Oswego Fire Protection Department and the Oswego Police Department partner for the academy. Their time at the academy was split between the two departments. With Oswego firefighters, students learned forcible entry techniques and hose line and nozzle management skills. They were also given the chance to conduct search and rescue drills with fire gear in the dark and were able to complete a vehicle extrication of their own, according to a news release. Firefighters battle soaring temps as they fight to extinguish 7-alarm blaze in Massachusetts VIDEO: Firefighters battled high temperatures as they fought to extinguish a large, seven-alarm house fire in Revere Tuesday evening. Crews were called to the scene on Hyde Street where smoke and flames could be seen pouring out of the top of the home. The back side of the structure was charred. At least one other home caught fire due to constantly changing wind directions. Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion but all firefighters and residents were reported out of the building. With the humidity that has settled over the region over the last few days, it is likely that the firefighters tried to gain control of this fire in 104 degree temperatures, Chief Meteorologist Jeremy Reiner said. Crowds are being kept well away from the scene. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON 2 building inspectors among 6 charged in senior facility fire that killed resident, New York firefighter VIDEO: Four people have been arrested and two others charged in connection with a fire at a Spring Valley assisted living facility that claimed the lives of a resident and a firefighter earlier this year. District Attorney Thomas Walsh and New York State Fire Prevention and Control officials detailed the arrests and the results of the three-month long investigation at a Tuesday afternoon news conference. On March 23, 2021, volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd would heroically help rescue over 100 residents of the Evergreen Assisted Living Facility before passing away during rescue operations. A resident of the facility, 79-year-old Oliver Hueston, also died. A rabbi and his son associated with the facility are facing the most serious charges, for "actions that have been determined to cause the fire," Walsh said without elaborating. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Machine learning could save firefighters from deadly flashovers New machine learning algorithms could soon help firefighters forecast dangerous flashover ignition events using sensor data from burning buildings. Called P-Flash, the system was developed by Thomas Cleary and colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the US and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Trained using data from thousands of simulated fires, the model can predict some flashovers in housefires up to 30 s before they occur. Flashovers are among the most hazardous threats faced by firefighters. At high temperatures, all exposed combustible material in a room can be ignited simultaneously, releasing a huge amount of energy. To avoid danger, while maximizing the amount of time spent searching a fire for victims, it is critical for firefighters to predict these events as far in advance as possible. PHYSICS WORLD Child in France builds special bond with Florida firefighters VIDEO: Jordan Pinol is never too far away from his fire hat. The French child, who leaves on the border near Geneva, Switzerland, has fond memories of a family trip to Florida in 2018. "He loves everything about firefighters," said his dad, Alex. Jordan, now 6, begged his family to stop at the fire station while visiting Clearwater. The excited child wanted to see how big American fire trucks were compared to trucks back home. The crew at Station 45 in Clearwater invited everyone inside, gave Jordan that prized plastic hat, and posed for photos. Jordan got to see the trucks up close and learn about American firefighting. "Our crews really enjoy being able to have those interactions," said Division Chief John Klinefelter, who has been a firefighter for 20 years. "Now there is an open line of correspondence going back and forth a little bit with the family." WTSP-TV CBS 10 TAMPA From a Kentucky fire station to the stage: Meet the band Quickline VIDEO: Capt. Michael Renn had a few minutes before dinner with the rest of the crew at Louisville Fire Department's Engine 2. With diving gear from training that day drying out behind him, he sat down for a quick jam session with Sgt. Alex Eckert — fellow firefighter and fellow band mate. "I think it started off with me kind of probably just playing guitar, bringing my guitar up to the fire house, and then bumping into actually…our lead singer," said Renn. Lead singer and harmonica player Capt. Sam Pierce works out of Engine 15 and Sgt. Trevor Dixon, on the drums, is at Engine 9. Eckert plays bass and also works out of Engine 2. "The name of our band is Quickline," said Renn. "On our engine companies, it is the first line that we would pull off. It is our go-to hand line with water in it that we take into a structure."
