Chicago Cubs Become the First MLB Team to Install American College of Surgeons STOP THE BLEED Kits In a first for Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs have taken an important step to keep fans, staff, and players safe in case a bleeding emergency occurs by installing trauma kits at Wrigley Field. Details about this initiative will be shared this evening at the Wrigley Field Advisory Meeting at 6 p.m. for community members at the 19th Police District Community Room. During the offseason, the Cubs worked with the City of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), as part of their Safe Chicago initiative, to install American College of Surgeons STOP THE BLEED® kits around Wrigley Field and train ballpark staff and Cubs associates on how to respond if someone is bleeding from an injury. A person can bleed to death in as little as five minutes, and it is estimated that 57% of civilian deaths from blood loss could have been prevented if proper bleeding control techniques were applied. CITY OF CHICAGO Montclare Fire That Left 4 in Critical Condition Was At Home of Chicago Firefighter, CFD Says A woman and three young children are in critical condition after the home they were in on the northwest side of Chicago caught fire late Tuesday night, officials say. According to the Chicago Fire Department, firefighters and police responded to a fire at approximately 9:10 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in the 2500 block of North Rutherford, in Chicago's Montclare neighborhood. Chicago police confirmed that a woman, 34, and three young children -- a boy, 7, and two girls, ages 7 and 2, all suffered smoke inhalation as a result of the blaze and were transported to various hospitals in critical condition. According to officials, all four remain in critical condition as of early Wednesday morning. Photos and video from the scene show a fire truck parked on a residential street, with more than a dozen and fire and police responders gathered in front of a home near the corner of Rutherford Avenue and Altgeld Street. Wednesday morning, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford confirmed to NBC 5 that the home belongs to a member of the Chicago Fire Department. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Crews work together to put out Danville chemical fires Fire crews from across Vermilion County worked together to put out a fire at a chemical plant. One fire chief says because of dangerous chemicals inside, time was of the essence. It happened at Lebanon Seaboard near Ross and Carlson Lanes in Danville. Lynch, Catlin, Kickapoo, Westville, Tilton, and Georgetown emergency responders were all there. A Tilton Division Chief says it was important to get the fire out as soon as possible because of what was on the other side of the wall. Workers used about 20 extinguishers to try to put out the fire before crews arrived. But smoke and flames were still visible when firefighters showed up. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN One year later, cause of fatal Garden Prairie house still ‘undetermined' One year after a house fire killed five people in Boone County, the cause of the blaze still remains undetermined, according to fire officials. On March 7th, 2022, Boone County Sheriff's Deputies and fire departments from around the county were called to a farmhouse in the 11000 block of Fleming Road. A house, shed and three vehicles caught fire, leaving the occupants inside trapped. Six people were rescued from the burning home, but a child, two teenagers, and two adults were killed. It took the first firefighters 16 minutes to arrive because of the foul weather and the nearest fire station was unmanned, according to Boone County Fire Chief Brian Kunce. That's about twice as long as it would take under normal conditions, he said. WTVO-TV ABC 17 ROCKFORD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Crews douse flames from Texas apartment complex fire, video shows VIDEO: Flames robbed several residents of their home after crews battled to put out a massive fire at an apartment complex in the Alief area. SkyEye was over Tuesday's scene in the 8300 block of Wilcrest, where flames were seen shooting through the roof, followed by heavy smoke. Investigators are still working to know what sparked the fire. "We do have reports of hoarding," Houston Fire Department Deputy Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle said. Sky-Eagle confirmed with Eyewitness News that there were no injuries, but eight families were affected. Families affected by the fire told ABC13 they are trying to figure out what comes next. One family said all they can focus on is thanking God for being able to get out alive. "My heart dropped to my chest," one resident said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON ‘The Grannys' play basketball game against Oklahoma fire department to raise money for charity VIDEO: A basketball team of women in their 60s and 70s took on the Tuttle Fire Department to raise money for charity. The team goes by ‘The Grannys.' "The average age of our team is about 60, and our oldest player is 79," said Lori Rupert, forward and captain. The grannies don't just cook in the kitchen. Get them out on the floor and they'll cook up a triple-double. "We have our own refs. They're sitting right there and they're going to make sure the firefighters don't hurt us," Rupert said. In the Granny League, you can only dribble twice, then pass. "There's no running and jumping. We try to protect ourselves. We don't want to fall, and if someone falls, it's called "Granny down," and Granny has to leave the game to make sure she's ok," Rupert said. Even though the grannies look confident, the competition was tough. The Tuttle FD was laced up and ready to go. "Oh, he just made a granny shot…dang! He's been practicing!" Rupert said. KOCO-TV ABC 5 OKLAHOMA CITY Florida firefighters respond to call and make lifesaving discovery VIDEO: The lifesaving equipment St. Lucie County Fire District firefighters started using about three years ago is making history and saving lives. Crews responded to a call about a fall Tuesday in the area of A1A on Hutchinson Island shortly after 8:30 in the morning. While firefighters were on the scene, they were alerted to high levels of carbon monoxide by a detector attached to equipment carried on their belts. Firefighter and paramedic Allen Civita said the residents were unaware they were exposed to carbon monoxide. "We don't like hearing stories where a family is found, and it's too late," Civita said. "But in this case, luckily, that's not how it ended." People inside the home were evacuated, and crews started searching for the source. "When I got to the garage, I noticed that there was a car parked in the garage, and it was still on, the door was down," Civita said. WPBF-TV ABC 25 TEQUESTA International Women's Day: Police lieutenant was first female firefighter in one west-central North Carolina department Tayler Alexander was in middle school on 9/11, watching with her classmates as the terrorist attacks unfolded. She knew then a career of helping others was the path for her. "I decided, ‘alright, I'm either going to be doing law enforcement, be a firefighter or get into the military,'" Alexander said. When she made it to high school, Alexander did an internship with the Lenoir Fire Department, and ended up working there part-time as a high school senior. "While everybody was going to senior week, the chief was like, ‘you can either go to Myrtle Beach or I can give you a full-time job,'" Alexander said. "So I was like, ‘oh, I'll take a full-time job.'" She started working there full time in 2008, making history as the first woman to ever work for the city's fire department.
