VIDEO: Building destroyed at Albany Park fire in Chicago More than nine hours after it started, emergency crews are still on the scene of a fire in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood. Around noon, crews responded to the extra-alarm fire in the 3000 block of West Lawrence Avenue Tuesday afternoon at the Jojo Discount Outlet Home Store. As crews worked to contain the fire, the building partially collapsed. Despite the rubble of a crumpled roof, firefighters report no injuries. The building is a total loss. Darinka Dalessio, who lives in the area, witnessed the thick black smoke filling the airs of the Northwest Side, with fire-spitting flames bursting through storefront windows. "Black smoke, it looked like a war zone – as if a bomb had just hit, billowing black smoke," Dalessio said. "At one point, the fire leapt out of the windows, broke the windows, started putting things on the street on fire. It was just horrible." WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Springfield home completely leveled after explosion VIDEO: The Springfield Fire Department says no one was injured when a home exploded Tuesday night in the 2500 block of Sandgate. Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m. after a witness reported a home had blown up and was on fire. Crews arrived to find the home completely leveled with debris for half a block in all directions. There was also significant damage to the homes on either side of the one which exploded. Neighbors told firefighters that the owners of the home which exploded were out of town. The home is a total loss. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. No injuries were reported. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Peoria Fire Dept. faces delayed response times, hoping to secure grant to fund 11 positions It's been about four months since fire engine 2 returned to service in Peoria, after city leaders realized how much it was needed. Over the weekend a high rise apartment building saw a fire and engine 2 played a crucial role. Now, the union president says response times still are not where they should be. "It's kind of like playing scratch off lotto tickets. We're scratching them off and hoping we win, but one of these days we're not going to win and we're going to come up short," said Local 50 Union President, Ryan Brady. Brady says the city is still struggling with fewer firefighters and the same amount of calls. "Things haven't really ever slowed down," said Brady. Over the weekend he says they spent about six hours fighting a high rise apartment fire downtown Peoria. "That's half the city's resources to fight one fire in the city of Peoria and that went on for several hours," said Brady. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA Joliet now has commemorative coins PHOTOS: Joliet now has a city coin – three of them. City Manager James Capparelli had the commemorative coins created to be handed out for awards and recognition. When the Joliet Catholic Academy football and wrestling teams came to a City Council meeting last week to be recognized for its state championship seasons, Councilman Pat Mudron handed out a batch of them for team members. "We have a new tradition that our city manager has brought with a coin that has our logo on one side and the bridges, which we always don't like here, but the bridges on the other side," Mudron said as he presented the coins and couldn't help remarking on the often non-functioning although picturesque downtown drawbridges that have been used before as a symbol for Joliet. THE HERALD-NEWS - METERED SITE Elected Officials Take Citizen Fire Operations Course With Oswego Fire Protection District A group of local elected officials joined the Oswego Fire Protection District in the first Citizen Fire Operation Course as a way to learn about the job and duties of fire crews March 19. Officials spent all of Saturday participating in the course held at the fire department's training facility located on the Station 3 campus in Montgomery. The event, officials said Tuesday, is designed to increase understanding and awareness of the OFPD. People who participated learned about the department's day-to-day operations, car fires, vehicle extrication and fire behavior. They also saw what a cardiac response looks like through a "mega code" demonstration. For the event, local officials were fitted in turnout gear and had the opportunity to participate in hands-on scenarios such as advancing a hose line, putting out a care fire, using a thermal imaging camera and using tools during a vehicle extrication, OFPD officials said. VIDEO: 2 firefighters hurt battling Pepsi warehouse blaze in New Jersey Two firefighters are hurt after a massive fire at a Pepsi warehouse in Piscataway, New Jersey. At one point, the blaze was so big, several people in the neighborhood said they heard loud explosions. As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported, firefighters worked throughout the night to put out hotspots. One was treated at the hospital for heat exhaustion, and the other for a shoulder injury. However, all 30 employees who worked at the regional plant managed to escape without injury. Chopper 2 was overhead as more than 100 firefighters worked to put out the flames. Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler said he raced to the plant after hearing explosions not far from his home. "I live approximately five minutes away, I heard the explosions," he told CBS2. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Related: Massive fire breaks out at PepsiCo factory in New Jersey VIDEOS: Multiple fire departments were on the scene of a very large fire at the PepsiCo factory in Piscataway on Tuesday evening. The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. outside the factory on New Brunswick Avenue. The fire sent large plumes of black smoke into the sky, which could be seen for miles. Bright orange flames were also seen on the roof of the building. One witness described the scene as a "tornado of fire." Others reported hearing loud explosions from miles away. Officials say that all PepsiCo employees were safely evacuated. The plant manager says that the staff trains for emergencies like this on a regular basis. No employees were hurt. More than 100 firefighters from Piscataway and surrounding towns came to battle the fire. One volunteer firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion. Another suffered a shoulder injury. Both are expected to be OK. NEWS 12 WESTCHESTER Robot dogs to join New York Fire Department's ‘lifesaving' mission PHOTOS: See Spot run. See Spot fight fires? The New York Fire Department announced that they will begin using robot dogs made by engineering company Boston Dynamics in the department's search-and-rescue missions. Each $75,000 robot dog, known as Spot, will be controlled by a human operator and will be able to collect images and data. The mechanical K-9 unit will also be used to measure the concentration of dangerous gases, gauge structural integrity and descend deep underground after a fire or building collapse. The FDNY has recruited two robot dogs that will be on the scene in the coming weeks, becoming the first fire department in the country to utilize the mechanical helpers. "We have a lot of work ahead of us to get acclimated to the robot dogs," a fire department spokesperson told The Post. The FDNY began employing the use of ground robotics nearly 10 years ago, and created a separate robotics unit in 2020. THE NEW YORK POST No, it's not a tornado: Here's why one Illinois town sometimes hears a siren blaring When the siren goes off, Fire Chief Terry Schadt says that's a sign that help's on the way. But those not in the know, or who aren't longtime residents of West Peoria, might instead think a tornado's on the way. To the untrained ear, the siren West Peoria's Fire Department uses to call its volunteer force to the firehouse on Waverly Avenue sounds a lot like the shrill tone that tells people to take cover. So why does West Peoria use the siren? To Schadt, using the siren is a longstanding practice, one he's not inclined to change. Volunteer fire departments used to all have sirens to notify personnel to rush to the station, Schadt said. West Peoria's went into service in 1940. But he says it's more than just a tradition, it also serves a practical purpose. The department has adapted to a more modern era by also sending text messages and pages to volunteers. But the siren is harder to miss. JOURNAL STAR - METERED SITE Georgia firefighters move back into station after mold sickened staff Milton firefighters returned Monday to an upgraded Fire Station 41, having spent months being hosted by their Roswell colleagues while needed mold remediation work was completed. Station 41, at the intersection of New Providence Road and Arnold Mill Road/State Route 140, closed last November after an air quality assessment found high levels of black mold spores in its bunk room and elevated levels in its common areas. Very soon after this issue came to light, the City of Roswell welcomed Milton firefighters, equipment, and resources to co-locate with their own crews at Roswell's Fire Station 6. That station at 825 Cox Road is just 1.5 miles from Milton's Station 41, minimizing the response times for incidents in the coverage area. ALPHARETTA-MILTON PATCH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
