Funeral Service Set for Grayslake Firefighter Who 'Cared Deeply About His Community' Funeral services have been set for a longtime Grayslake firefighter who died last week at the age of 46. A wake for Mike Higgins, who worked for the Grayslake Fire Protection District for 26 years, has been set for 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Symonds Lakes Funeral Home, 1111 W. Belvidere Road in Grayslake. Higgins most recently served as the fire district's battalion chief. His funeral has been set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Gilberts Church, 301 E. Belvidere Road in Grayslake. A procession and a private burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Higgins, 46, of Libertyville, was first hired as a full-time employee in 2001, Dan Pierce, fire chief for the Grayslake Fire Protection District, said in a letter to fire protection district employees. He was the medical officer for several years and was passionate about improving the quality of emergency medical services and training as a way to improve Grayslake's emergency service. GRAYSLAKE PATCH Danville family escapes blaze that destroyed their home Five family members escaped an early-morning fire in Danville that destroyed their home. Danville fire interim Chief Aaron Marcott said a space heater in use caused the fire in the 100 block of Illinois Street. There were no working smoke detectors in the house, he said. Firefighters arrived at 3:17 a.m. Tuesday and found heavy flames coming from the rear of the two-story wood-frame house and out the roof. The occupants had gotten out safely, but their pets were inside. Firefighters got the fire under control within about 30 minutes and were able to remove two dogs and a cat. They remained at the house until 6 a.m. The home and contents are considered a total loss. The Red Cross was notified to help the family. THE NEWS-GAZETTE Chicago man sentenced to 15 years for pouring paint thinner in Oak Brook theater, attempting to set it on fire A Chicago man has been sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for pouring paint thinner on the floor of the Oak Brook AMC Theater, and then attempting to light a cigarette while being escorted out of the building. David Ferguson, 33, pled guilty this week to one count of attempted aggravated arson. An arrest warrant was executed on July 2, 2018 against Ferguson, who was being held in the Cook County Jail for unrelated aggravated arson charges. On Jan. 12, 2018, the manager of the Oak Brook Center AMC Theater was notified by a staff member of a suspicious individual walking around the area of theater five, prosecutors said. When the manager went to theater five, he could smell a strong odor, later determined to be paint thinner, coming from theater six. Patrons were also seen quickly leaving that theater. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Dogs die, resident injured in Charleston house fire Several dogs died in a Charleston house fire Tuesday afternoon that has left three residents displaced, fire officials said According to a news release from the Charleston Fire Department, there was one resident home when the fire broke out. The resident, who was able to escape through a second-story window, received treatment on the scene. The home at 102 N. 12th St. suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage, the release said. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the residents with resources. The fire started around 4 p.m. Due to the heavy fire found on the scene by the responding crews, a second alarm was called to bring in additional resources and manpower to assist with the fire and ambulance calls in the city. JOURNAL AND COURIER - METERED SITE Edwardsville breaks ground for new fire station Despite blustery southwest winds, Edwardsville city and fire officials officially broke ground on the new East Fire Station Tuesday. Aldermen Chris Farrar, Jack Burns, SJ Morrison and Jennifer Warren and several city staff members also attended. Mayor Art Risavy and Fire Chief James Whiteford delivered brief remarks due to the weather conditions. There was no podium, microphone or speakers. Whiteford said this project has its roots as far back as 2010 under former Mayor Gary Niebur who formed a committee to investigate whether the city needed to modify its fire coverage for residents. Up until the mid-2000s, Whiteford said Edwardsville had maintained a north-to-south orientation. Ten to 15 years ago, that began changing into the present east-to-west orientation present today. "These types of fire trucks are not really necessary outside of the airport. They are designed specifically for aircraft and airports," said Board Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority Darlene Wilson.
