Peoria fire to hire 11 new firefighters after receiving grant 11 new firefights are joining the Peoria Fire Department and it's thanks to the SAFER grant. It is a federally funded grant that helps with paying and hiring new fire fighters. Last year the department was struggling to find enough men to join the team, so they applied for the SAFER grant to help bridge that gap. The grant is enough money to pay all the expenses of 11 firefighters like health care and salary for the next four years, that's about 4 million dollars. The 11 new men will be working fire engine two – an engine that is currently sustained by overtime workers. "The relief, the man power that's needed for engine two. One we knew that engine two just having firefighters on it was vitally important to our success to our fire department now getting the proper amount of fighter fighters to staff that is such a relief," Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Follow-up: Disaster declaration issued after deadly Chicago building explosion, allowing residents to apply for relief loans The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved a disaster declaration for a South Austin neighborhood apartment building where an explosion and collapse killed one person and injured seven others, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced Tuesday. The declaration allows people affected by the explosion to apply for loans for relief. "Victims of the September 20th Chicago apartment building explosion deserve all of our available resources to heal and rebuild," Pritzker said in a news release. "Thanks to the leadership of IEMA Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau and the Small Business Administration, families and residents can apply for low-interest loans for damages that are not covered by insurance—one of the many ways that we are providing financial relief during this time of tragedy and uncertainty. My heart goes out to all of the Illinoisans who were affected by this devastating explosion—and please know the State of Illinois stands with you and is here to support you in your recovery efforts." WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Alton firefighters receive vehicle training Stabilization training has been held for Alton firefighters this week at Junk Brothers Auto Salvage at 27 Missouri Ave. in Alton. The training, conducted by an instructor with the University of Illinois' Fire Service Institute, focused on how to secure vehicles in dangerous positions before a rescue operation. If cars are on hills, hanging over cliffs, on top of each other or partially in the air for any reason firefighters need to make sure they don't shift to make rescue efforts safe for both the victims and firefighters. Alton firefighters also had a chance to test out new equipment the department recived in the last six months, which is more up to date and will help rescue workers assure stability on the scene. The training is part of the ongoing refresher training firefighters receive on a regular basis. VIDEO: Massive fire breaks out at former bank building in California A massive fire erupted at a former bank building in Boyle Heights and authorities say a person of interest is being interviewed. The blaze was reported at around 1:30 p.m. at a vacant, single-story structure located at 1308 S. Soto St, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. AIR7 HD captured intense flames quickly burning through the roof of the building, sending a towering column of thick black smoke into the air. LAFD investigators said a fire in the attic quickly spread throughout the vacant building, which was mostly boarded up. Los Angeles firefighters worked for almost two hours to fully put out the blaze. One firefighter was reportedly being evaluated at the scene for minor injuries. Further details surrounding the person of interest weren't immediately released. No evacuation orders were issued, according to authorities. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Editorial: Searching for the living, finding the dead; Hurricane Ian takes toll on rescuers, too They go from door to door, hoping to find survivors and accounting for the dead, a grueling mission that continues even as bright and sunny skies make monstrous Hurricane Ian seem like something out of our deepest nightmares. "We end up in this paradise — but next to us is an apocalypse," one Miami-Dade firefighter assigned to a rescue team told the Miami Herald's David Goodhue. As Southwest Florida assesses the damage and figures out what the future may hold in a post-Ian world, rescue teams from around Florida and beyond go about their tasks, on foot and sometimes with dogs, knocking on the doors of wrecked homes and businesses, looking under piles of debris and checking inside the shells of buildings. They work methodically, block by block, but not without emotion, "Forget about our jobs," the firefighter said. "We're human." MIAMI HERALD - METERED SITE North Carolina firefighters recovering from flash fire burns Two High Point firefighters are quickly recovering after coming face-to-face with a fire that caused first and second-degree burns to several parts of their bodies. "I definitely feel like it was one of those situations that was kind of a freak accident and kind of the wrong place at the wrong time," Josh Bryant said. Bryant has been a firefighter for the past ten years and has worked for the High Point department for six of them. He said in his years on the job, he has never been in a situation that caused extensive burns to his body. Last month, Bryant and several other crew members were working to clean out dust from a silo at the High Point Furniture Industries Warehouse. WGHP-TV FOX 8 HIGH POINT Wisconsin: ‘Decon' buckets prevent cancer in firefighters Chippewa Valley Technical College presented the Chippewa Falls Fire Station with a decontamination bucket to help prevent cancer in their first responders. Firefighters have an increased risk of cancer because of the various carcinogens they are exposed to on the job. Money was raised by CVTC to provide these buckets to local fire departments. The decontamination buckets contain items such as a fire hose adapter, soap, and a scrub brush so firefighters can start to decontaminate their gear on scene. CVTC Fire Training Manager, Mark Schwartz, says when he heard every fire station in Florida was provided with similar "decon" buckets he wanted to contribute in the same way locally.
