Michele Pankow to be sworn-in as Rockford's first-ever female fire chief History will be made on today as Michele Pankow will be sworn-in as Rockford's first-ever female fire chief. The swearing-in ceremony is set for 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Hall. We'll have coverage of the ceremony on-air and online. Pankow is currently a Division Chief of Operations with the Rockford Fire Department. Michele Pankow joined the Rockford Fire Department in 1992. Working her way up the ranks, she became the first woman in the history of the Rockford Fire Department to become a division chief in 2016. Chief Pankow currently serves as the Division Chief of Operations. She holds an associate's degree from Rock Valley College, a bachelor's degree in fire service management from Southern Illinois University and a master's in public administration from Northern Illinois University. This will be the first time a woman will lead the Rockford Fire Department. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD Deputy fire chief George May promoted to fire chief in Marysville Mayor Craig Short appointed Deputy Fire Chief George May at a recent village board meeting to become the village's new fire chief. He succeeds Chief Kevin Flaugher, who had served as the village's fire chief since 1984. May said that he joined the department as a volunteer in November 1996. He was promoted to a full-time intermediate emergency medical technician one year later. He became deputy fire chief in August 2018. "Chief Flaugher and I have worked closely with each other the entire time I have been here, so we knew this was going to happen for about a year," May said. Unlike in some other municipalities, Maryville's fire chief does not choose who will become the next deputy chief. Thus, Short appointed May's successor. EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER Tinley Park To Host Patriot Day Events On 9/11 Anniversary The Village of Tinley Park has a day full of activities planned Saturday, to honor the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in an effort to remember the lives that were lost. The event will be streamed live on the Village's Facebook page. After the ceremony, the day will continue with the Tinley Park Fire Prevention Open House from 9 to 11 a.m. at Station 46. Residents are invited to come out to practice fire safety drills, learn hands-only CPR, take the Junior Firefighter Challenge and see other fire safety displays, according to the village. Reno Breathe Bar offering oxygen naps to firefighters VIDEO: Reno Breathe Bar in Midtown is offering oxygen naps for firefighters in Northern Nevada. It's a way for the business to say thank you to those battling the fires in our area. "I just really want to make sure the families and friends of these firefighters know we are open for them whenever we can get them in," said Amy Burkett, owner of the Breathe Bar. Burkett says she has two firefighters scheduled. All you need is proof you're a firefighter to get an oxygen nap. She says the ambiance at the Breathe Bar could help just as much as the oxygen. "Oxygen is going to help them, but I think more than anything the rest, Burkett says. "If they want to come in and lay here for an hour, I would even let them take an hour nap. I know that these guys and women are tired. They've been working a lot." KOLO-TV ABC/CW+ 8 RENO Nearly 2 decades after 9/11, a former firefighter sees the NYC memorial for the first time VIDEO: Michael Silvestri dipped his fingers into the flowing water and made the sign of the cross, from his forehead to his broken heart. The waters here, in the South Pool of New York City's 9/11 Memorial, are like holy water, he said. "It's sacred. It's their graves," Silvestri said. His cross was also a silent prayer for the strength he needed to stand at this memorial for the first time. Faith had helped Silvestri, now 59, get this far. The former firefighter survived 9/11 two decades ago, but he's been fighting for his life ever since. Silvestri moved to Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, more than a decade ago to get away from all the reminders on Staten Island. He was haunted by painful memories, undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and the survivor's guilt that devoured him alive. It culminated in 10 seconds of rage 16 months after 9/11 that nearly cost him everything, followed by years of the slow path toward healing, the hard work of turning survival to rebirth. ERIE TIMES-NEWS - METERED SITE Toxic firefighting foams; a challenge for Massachusetts to quickly replace Fire departments across Massachusetts face a "daunting" task in replacing the foams they use to fight fires caused by fuels or other flammable liquids, one chief told a task force mulling ways the state can address contamination by a class of chemicals known as PFAS. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of long-lasting, man-made chemicals used for decades in consumer products like non-stick coating and in certain firefighting foams. Probing issues around where PFAS contamination in Massachusetts comes from and who should bear responsibility for cleaning it up, the panel heard Tuesday from state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and fire chiefs Peter Burke of Hyannis and John Dearborn of Longmeadow. Last year's state budget created the PFAS Interagency Task Force, led by House Speaker Pro Tempore Kate Hogan and Sen. Julian Cyr, to study PFAS contamination, exposure pathways and mitigation strategies. WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD New Studies Find Evidence Of 'Superhuman' Immunity To COVID-19 In Some Individuals Some scientists have called it "superhuman immunity" or "bulletproof." But immunologist Shane Crotty prefers "hybrid immunity." "Overall, hybrid immunity to SARS-CoV-2 appears to be impressively potent," Crotty wrote in commentary in Science back in June. No matter what you call it, this type of immunity offers much needed good news in what seems like an endless array of bad news regarding COVID-19. Over the past several months, a series of studies has found that some people mount an extraordinarily powerful immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Their bodies produce very high levels of antibodies, but they also make antibodies with great flexibility — likely capable of fighting off the variants of coronavirus circulating in the world but also likely effective against variants that may emerge in the future.
