Itasca firefighter with terminal cancer takes final ride home in ambulance with fiancé, dog An Illinois firefighter diagnosed with terminal cancer took his final ride home Tuesday in the very same ambulance he once used to transport patients. Frank Nunez, 34, was diagnosed with a rare form of soft tissue cancer called synovial sarcoma in 2019. He was treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and went into remission. In 2021, the cancer returned in his left lung, and he participated in several clinical trials. During his treatment, he never stopped working at the Itasca Fire Protection District. Nunez started his career in 2014 and joined the Itasca Fire Protection District in 2018. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Passing fire inspector saves Des Plaines residents from burning home A Des Plaines Fire Department inspector on his way to an appointment Monday afternoon spotted smoke coming from the eaves of a house on the 500 block of South Mount Prospect Road and was able to help the residents escape the burning home. Mike Donovan, a 23-year veteran of the department, called dispatchers just before 2 p.m. to report the blaze and then went to help the residents escape the home before fellow firefighters arrived, fire officials said. Fire Chief Daniel Anderson said investigators determined the fire was caused by "torch work" being done on plumbing inside the home to repair water pipes. The fire had grown inside the walls of the tri-level, single-family home before climbing into the attic where it gathered momentum, he added. DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Palos Park Firefighters Will Breathe Cleaner Air Thanks To Donation Firefighters with the Palos Fire District will have more protection on the job now thanks to a donation of 25 respirator/mask devices that were donated to the department on Monday as part of a partnership with an Orland Park company. The donation of the mask/respirator devices are valued at $5,000 and was made possible thanks to the generosity of EZCloud Solutions, which is a multi-faceted company based in Orland Park. The masks were provided to the local first responders as part of National Preparedness Month, which is observed during the month of September, according to a news release. Michael Gabriele, deputy chief of the Palos Fire District, said that the donation of the masks and respirators took place during a ceremony at the local department on Monday in Palos Park. PALOS PARK PATCH Man charged with murder in deadly Troy house fire A man was charged with murder in connection with the Troy, Illinois, house fire that left a 69-year-old woman dead. Michael Sloan Jr. was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and other charges Tuesday in connection with the death of Susanne Tomlinson. On Friday, surviving victim Courtney Tomlinson said she and Sloan got into an argument at her home in the 500 block of Wood Thrush Street in Troy, Illinois. Sloan had lived with her "off and on" for nearly two years, Courtney Tomlinson said. A Tuesday press release from Madison County State's Attorney Thomas Haine mirrored Courtney Tomlinson's account of the deadly incident she provided to 5 On Your Side's Robert Townsend on Friday. KSDK-TV NBC 5 ST. LOUIS Boone County First Responders urge people not to drive while distracted A fatal accident on a Boone County road Monday raises concerns about safety. Some experts point to distracted driving as a big reason for the climbing accident totals. This includes Boone County Fire Protection District Chief Brian Kunce. Kunce responded to the fatal accident Monday, but as soon as he sat down to do an interview with 23 News on Tuesday about safe driving, he was called to another car crash. "Today we had a vehicle that rear ended a dump truck, the gentleman fell asleep at the wheel," Kunce said. Luckily, there were only minor injuries, but Kunce says incidents like that are cropping up too often in the county. "People are distracted and speeding, whether they're under the influence, on the phone, falling asleep, there are so many different things that cause the accidents," he told 23 News. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Fire Badly Damages Home In Downers Grove A resident was displaced from their home in the 4000 block of Main Street after a fire broke out inside the house late Monday, causing considerable smoke and fire damage. When they got to the scene, they found a "large amount of fire" coming from the back of the house, a news release said Tuesday. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA 2 firefighters injured in Texas apartment explosion return to work 1 year later VIDEO: Two of the three firefighters critically injured in an apartment gas explosion in Southeast Oak Cliff returned to work on Tuesday. They managed to make the return two days before the one-year anniversary of the explosion. One year ago on Thursday, Cpt. Christopher Gadomski, Ron Hall and Pauline Perez were investigating a gas leak at Highland Hills Apartments in Southeast Oak Cliff. Hall was a driver engineer for Dallas Fire-Rescue. He says he was about to evacuate when he saw fellow firefighter Perez enter the unit where the leak was detected. "I was like I've got to get her out of that apartment. As soon as I stepped in, it blew," Hall recalled. Dallas police charged Phillip Dankins with firing a gun into that apartment hours before the explosion on Sept. 29, 2021. Police reports say a bullet hit a stove and cut a gas line. KIRO-TV CBS 7 SEATTLE Michigan firefighters combat cancer with shirts, hats and mustaches In addition to battling blazes, Dearborn Heights firefighters are hard at work these days trying to snuff out something that hits very close to home for them – cancer. The department has embraced a "Movember" fundraising campaign that encourages mustache growth to raise awareness of men's health issues. Firefighters are selling shirts and hats emblazoned with a specially-designed logo featuring caricatures of two members of Dearborn Heights Professional Firefighters Union Local 1355. One of those faces belongs to Lt. James Ursitti. He said the decision to put down their razors and electric shavers was an easy one. "Cancer rates for firefighters are extremely high when compared to the general public," he said. PRESS & GUIDE - METERED SITE Retired Ohio firefighter benefitting from new device to help chronic knee pain VIDEO/PHOTOS: Chuck Stenger loved being a firefighter in New Albany. But after serving for more than 30 years, his career was cut short by his knee. "Started noticing trouble with climbing a ladder, went to an orthopedic doc and was getting shots of cortisone," Stenger said. One day, the pain was so bad Stenger said he fell over while helping a patient. "It made the career a lot shorter than I wanted it to be," he said. Stenger answered an online survey about knee pain and then go a phone call. He was skeptical until he learned it was OSU Wexner Medical Center calling. Dr. David Flanigan offered Stenger a spot in a clinical trial for a new device. "This is truly, if you can imagine, just like you would see in a car, a shock absorber," Flanigan said. The device is implanted in the knee to help those with moderate arthritis. WSYX-TV FOX 28 COLUMBUS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
