"Images Gibellina" is the new name of the biennial photography and visual arts show that will henceforth take place in alternation with Images Vevey. Dedicated to the Vevey biennial in even years, Images Vevey will support the development of this Sicilian-based sister event in odd years. The next biennial is scheduled to take place this summer, from 30 July to 29 August 2021.

After two very successful collaborations in 2019 and 2020, the Vevey and Gibellina biennials have strengthened their ties with a new name and a new logo for the Italian version. Images Gibellina will be held every two years, in summer, alternating with the Images Vevey Festival. The organisation will be carried out jointly by Images Vevey (Switzerland) and On Image (Italy) based in Rome, under the co-direction of Arianna Catania (On Image) and Stefano Stoll (Images Vevey).

A new visual designed by the Lausanne-based Swiss-Italian graphic design duo Nicolas Polli and Jacopo Atzori symbolises the collaboration between the two entities, mixing the emblematic eye of Images Vevey with the symbol of the city centre typical of Italian road signs, in reference to the artistic programme that will occupy the city centre of Gibellina, both indoors and outdoors. Finally, this sun-shaped logo also evokes the summer season in Sicily.

Inspired by Images Vevey, the Italian version will also focus on monumental outdoor installations and artistic projects, tailor-made to fit in with the incredible architecture of this small town located 30 minutes south of Palermo.

Destroyed by an earthquake in 1968, the town is now covered by the world’s largest permanent piece of land art, created in 1984 by the artist Alberto Burri. The mayor at the time undertook to rebuild Gibellina Nuova, 20 km to the south. Calling on the most avant-garde architects and artists of his time, he planned a city for 20,000 residents. Only some 3,000 live there today, and most of the buildings are as spectacular as they are unfinished. Gibellina is a real open-air museum, with dozens of sculptures that artists such as Mimmo Paladino, Mimmo Rotella, Daniel Spoerri and Richard Long have left as a tribute. Joseph Beuys, Alighiero Boetti or Joseph Kosuth: the list of artists who have succumbed to the fascination of this town is long, and this Festival is now hoping to pay tribute to them.

While this historical and artistic context makes Gibellina a particularly inspiring site, this collaboration around Images Gibellina is an opportunity for Images Vevey to share know-how, exchange artists, circulate projects and draw attention to this architectural utopia, while participating in its economic, social and cultural development.
