Two important announcements!

Join us at the CUSP International Conference 2023

The European Research Cluster to Understand the Health Impacts of Micro- and Nanoplastics invites you to take part in person at our International Conference on the Impact of MNPs on Human Health.
When: 14th September 2023 (09.00-17.00)
Where: Jaarbeurs Centre, Utrecht, Netherlands.

Background and purpose:
The CUSP International Conference 2023 will provide an opportunity for scientists, industry, policymakers and regulators, as well as civil society, to present and discuss results achieved over two years' intensive research within the five cluster projects, and enable you to find out about further achievements on an international scale.

The conference is an important milestone to determine where we are and what challenges we still face in assessing the potential impact on human health of MNPs and associated additives and chemicals.

Content and format:
Participants will hear from key experts on the state-of-the-art in human exposure, fate, health hazards, methodologies, risk assessment approaches, standardisation, and human biomonitoring, among other topics. You will also gain valuable insight into the latest results from the CUSP projects and other initiatives, including COST Action CA20101 PRIORITY; BRIGID (Plastics Europe); MINAGRIS; and the MOMENTUM network. A panel discussion will allow attendees to examine implications for policy, industry and regulation; and a subsequent poster session will facilitate further knowledge exchanges with plenty of opportunity for networking.

Who should attend?
The event will be of particular interest to EU services, representatives from EU institutions, regulators, industry, and members of other EU, national and international projects and networks.

Registration:
Please register here: https://forms.gle/AC4UVKBs36EYrRmCA
Please note that by registering for the conference you agree to pay the delegate fee of 40 € per person. The payment has to be made in advance and covers the conference costs.
Further details of how to make this payment will be provided later.

As the number of places is limited, they will be assigned on first come, first served basis, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Confirmation will be sent in July.

CUSP workshop series on Human Risk Assessment of MNPs
Proceedings available now!

As part of CUSP’s aim to investigate and discuss the applicability of existing risk assessment frameworks related to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), in the Spring of 2023, the CUSP Working Group on Risk Assessment (WG5), together with the CUSP member projects, delivered a series of three online thematic workshops under the theme “Human Risk assessment of Micro- and Nanoplastics (MNPs)”.

At each workshop, guest speakers and CUSP collaborators gathered to share updates on data, exchange ideas on the science policy on MNPs and discuss how to make scientific research relevant for effective regulations.

The proceedings from the three workshops are now available on Zenodo:

Workshop 1, organized by CUSP WG5 and PlasticHeal on February 7th, focused on regulatory insights and knowledge gaps.

Workshop 2, organised by CUSP WG5 and Polyrisk on March 14th, focused on risk assessment frameworks.

Workshop 3, organized by CUSP WG5 and PlasticsFatE on April 21st, focused on data and information gaps.

About CUSP
There is widespread scientific evidence on the ubiquity of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in our environment. The tiny particles which result from the degradation of larger plastics or which are manufactured and added to products for different purposes find their way into the human body through the food we eat, the water we drink or the very air we breathe. Yet, so far, we know little about the risks they pose to human health.

For this reason, the European Commission has decided to fund five research projects - AURORA, ImpToxPLASTICHEAL, PlasticsFatE and POLYRISK - that together form the European Research Cluster to Understand the Health Impacts of Micro- and NanoPlastics: CUSP. They will collaborate in gathering policy-relevant scientific data to improve the risk assessment of MNPs on human health.
