Foot Health for Better Knees, Hips, and Back

Honestly, when’s the last time you paid attention to your feet unless they were causing you pain?

Granted, I haven’t extensively polled my friends about their foot care regimens, but it’s easy to surmise that we largely neglect our poor feet. I’m not talking about getting the occasional pedicure or attacking your calluses with one of those terrifying implements that looks like a cheese grater. Cosmetic treatments are all well and good, but they don’t address the health and strength of your feet.

As a society, our feet are suffering. Just look at the market for custom insoles and corrective footwear. One of the most popular videos on the Mark’s Daily Apple YouTube channel is 2 Stretches to Heal Plantar Fasciitis. Last time I checked, it had well over 500,000 views. But it’s not just foot pain that’s a problem. Over a million people receive total hip or total knee replacement each year in the U.S. alone. By age 80, one in ten of us has a bionic knee. A recent survey estimated that 577 million worldwide were living with lower back pain, at great personal and economic cost.

What does this have to do with your feet? Everything.

Are You Obsessing Over Food?

There was a time in my life when I spent every waking moment thinking about food. What I was going to eat, when I was going to eat it, and how much protein I could get in per meal. To put it simply, I was obsessed. And honestly, I’d tell anyone who’d listen what plan I was on and how freaking amazing I felt doing it (spoiler alert, I didn’t actually feel amazing).

Here’s the thing though. When you make the program or plan that you’re following a big deal, it becomes THE THING you’re doing. Also, by the nature of it being a “thing” it inherently has a beginning and an end.

“I’m eating low carb so I can lose weight.”

“We’re planning on doing keto this summer.”

“I do intermittent fasting, but I’m taking a break to enjoy vacation.”

If any of these sound familiar, read on.

What Are the Best Probiotic Strains?

It seems like you have to have a microbiology degree to pick out a probiotic. Long, hard-to-pronounce names (in Latin, to boot), colony-forming units (CFUs), prebiotic blends... how to keep it all straight?

I've done a lot of personal research on the microbiome, and I find that strains from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera are the best-studied for most applications:

Lactobacillus paracasei

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Lactobacillus reuteri

Lactobacillus fermentum

Bifidobacterium lactis

Bifidobacterium bifidum

The thing about probiotics is that you never really know which one will work best until you try. It’s a very personal thing. Each strain is going to react different to your unique intestinal ecosystem and genome. Not every strain recommended here will work for everyone, but luckily there’s not much harm in trying.

And right now, you can try my favorite strains for free when you buy a bottle of Damage Control, a blend of antioxidants, phytonutrients, and essential vitamins and minerals that support your body’s natural processes and defenses. I like to take it during times of stress or when I'm fighting something off.

How to Cook Perfect Eggs Every Time: Boiled, Sunnyside Up, Poached, and More

When you ask people what foods they learned to cook first as a child, most often they’ll tell you scrambled eggs. Even though a kid can do it, there’s a lot of variation to your scrambled eggs. They can be dry or watery, fluffy or flat. That goes for other egg methods too – there’s a big difference between an overcooked hard-boiled egg and a perfectly jammy egg. So, I put together a tutorial on how to cook eggs perfectly, no matter how you like them.

Eggs cook quickly and are inexpensive, so you can try your hand at a cooking method you’ve never done before! If you mess up, you’re out a few pennies and a few minutes, and you can try again.
