At the Native Americans Films Find a Voice/RUMBLE: THE INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD panel, Variety moderator Steven Gaydos talked to Ray Halbritter, Nation Representative of the Oneida Indian Nation and Stevie Salas, a rock musician and an executive producer of the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World.
The film tells the story of the Native American 'hidden figures' who inspired generations of mainstream American musicians. In the film, such American entertainment artists as Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Taj Mahal, Steven Tyler, Martin Scorsese, George Clinton, Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton, Mike Inez, Taylor Hawkins, Slash, Taboo, Stevie Van Zandt, and Iggy Pop, among others, honor the Native American performers who paved the way for them and in some cases, were the reason they became musicians in the first place.
Joining Salas on the panel was Ray Halbritter, the Nation Representative of the Oneida Indian Nation and the CEO of Nation Enterprises. Halbritter and the Oneida Nation are among the executive producers of the film. RUMBLE tells the story of a profound, essential, and, until now, missing chapter in the history of American music: the Indigenous influence. Halbritter emphasized that uncovering these stories is essential to the emotional health of Native American and Indigenous people. Halbritter explained that it would have been life-changing in his youth to know more about the Native American heritage of these singular talents, including Link Wray, Mildred Bailey, Jesse Ed Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Redbone, Buffy Saint-Marie, Robbie Robertson and others.
