The Harbor Princess is returning to Charlevoix just in time for fall |
Yesterday I wrote about a few ways of how you can take in Michigan's spectacular fall colors by land and by air. But how about viewing it on the water? The Harbor Princess cruise boat will take a nostalgic return to Charlevoix in October and offer new fall color boat tours. The boat usually sails out of Petoskey but will make Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix its home from Oct. 3-13. The crew will also offer evening sunset trips and kids-themed trips. While you're Up North, be sure to take a joy ride through these two tree tunnels that will soon be bursting with autumn colors. |

In Michigan, Trump details aftermath of latest foiled assassination attempt |
Back in the Mitten: During a town hall-style rally Tuesday, Sept. 17, inside Flint’s Dort Financial Center, former President Donald Trump responded publicly to the latest reported attempt on his life. Trump revealed details about the capture of a suspect in the incident as well as sympathetic phone calls he received from two political rivals in recent days. Earlier on Tuesday: Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance spoke during a campaign rally in Sparta on Tuesday about “the elephant in the room,” referring to what he called a second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump that took place on Sunday. Vance also claimed Democrats are contributing to rhetoric that’s resulting in attempts on Trump’s life. Also this week: Vice President Kamala Harris will team with Oprah Winfrey in a livestream event that will be recorded in Detroit on Thursday, Sept. 19, Harris campaign officials said. |

Motown Museum unveils opening date, images of its mammoth $75 million expansion |
Preserving history: Museum officials have revealed the 40,000-square-foot, $75 million Motown Museum expansion will welcome its first visitors during the summer of 2026. It is all being built behind the iconic Hitsville U.S.A. house, the current location of the Motown Museum in Detroit. This expansion, which was announced in late 2016, will grow the museum to nearly 50,000 square feet. Seeing celebrities: The actor who played one of the most iconic villains in the “Star Wars” universe, Ray Park, is coming to Michigan this November for the state’s biggest comic con. He joins the growing star-studded list of celebrities who are expected to appear at the event. Landmark: Special behind-the-scenes tours of the Big Sable Point Light in Ludington State Park will be offered for the first time next month, officials announced. Despite this area of the state park being closed for construction, there will be four bus and tour days at the Big Sable Point Light on Saturdays in October. |

Garbage piles up at Flint Township mobile home park where there’s no running water |
Neglected: There’s a mountain of garbage that keeps getting bigger at the Myrtle Grove Mobile Home Park in Flint Township. Trash collection ended weeks ago and the township shut off water to the property on Aug. 5, saying the California company that owns the park owes more than $14,000 in past-due bills. Officials have tagged all of 28 homes in the park due to sewage seeping into the soil and deterioration. Needs funding: An apartment development promising to bring attainable housing options a short walk from downtown Dexter remains in the works. But the development team of the 76-unit apartment complex needs more time to pursue state or federal housing grants. In West Michigan: Woodchuck, which uses artificial intelligence to turn construction waste into renewable energy, is searching for a site to build a research facility and processing center in the Grand Rapids region. |

Researchers and engineers at Michigan State are turning to technology to help solve the rising production costs of apple harvesting in Michigan. On the verge of a mechanized revolution in the apple industry, MLive met with researchers and growers in early September at Schwallier’s Country Basket near Sparta for a prototype demonstration of an apple picking robot. Here's a look at how the apple picking technology works. What's next: As coal-burning generators go dark at the Consumers Energy Dan E. Karn coal plant site that sits over the Saginaw Bay, some are imagining a greener future for the prime waterfront property. Pitching in: Grand Rapids residents volunteered for seven days to help improve the health of the city's waterways by removing trash during the West Michigan Environmental Action Council's weeklong 21st annual Mayors’ Grand River Cleanup. |

Barricaded gunman shot by sniper facing 13 criminal charges |
A 32-year-old Farmington Hills man is facing 13 criminal charges in an alleged domestic violence incident that allegedly led to him barricading himself in a residence and shooting at police officers, officials said. The situation ended when the suspect was shot by a sniper, according to a news release from Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. In court: A Michigan woman has received a federal probation term for falsely claiming, in a drunken state, that a Saginaw Chippewa Tribal police officer raped her during an arrest. Neglected: A Grand Rapids mother will stand trial for open murder in connection to the death of her malnourished toddler, a judge ordered. The woman is charged with open murder and first-degree child abuse after one of her 19-month-old twins was found starved to death in her apartment. Her son was found in critical condition. |
