| | | | | | | | And finally... | | Wild Hebridean seas a big draw for Ross Ryanâs sailing and painting adventures | Last September, the artist Ross Ryan set sail from Crinan aboard Sgarbh, a 40-foot wooden fishing boat dating from 1947. His plan was to make a 60-day solo voyage around the Hebrides using the boat as his floating studio, and the results of his adventure are now on display at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. In his introduction to the exhibition catalogue, Ryan says that the idea of going sailing in the stormy months of autumn conjured up romantic images of ânursing the stove as the wind played tunes in the riggingâ but that the reality was âsomewhat less cosy.â Thatâs putting it mildly. Last autumn turned out to be even windier than usual on the west coast (anyone remember Hurricane Ophelia?) and Ryan says he often found himself âholed up in small guts waiting to be allowed to continue north.â | | Under the Radar: Lost In Vancouver | Edinburgh indie rock quartet Lost In Vancouver are beginning to generate a real buzz. Theyâve performed at Tenement Trail, Carnival 56 and BBC at the Edinburgh Festivals, played alongside artists as diverse as Mark Ronson and The Fratellis, as well as supporting up-and-coming bands such as Lional and Glass Caves. | | Film reviews: Deadpool 2 | Filmworker | While the Deadpool sequel is funnier and filthier than the original, its ruthless send-up of the superhero genre belies the fact it is a cash-making franchise itself | | Album reviews: Arctic Monkeys | Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert | Modern Studies | Arctic Monkeys trade guitar riffs for lounge singer crooning in an extraordinary â and inspired â change of direction |
