Incompetent to stand trial: Rise in cases strains mental health system

The number of people who were ruled incompetent to stand trial more than doubled in East Baton Rouge Parish between 2020 and 2022, court records show. The chief judge says it's a backlog from the time when COVID shut down the courts.

Louisiana is already out of room at its mental health hospitals, leaving many patients to languish in jails. And the backlog is only making things worse.
