Incredible stories of Eldership |
|
WARNING: The following content contains the images and names of Indigenous people who have died. "We are our grandparents. How we treat them reflects on how we treat ourselves. Be kind. Be loving. Be strong." This poignant quote from Yankunytjatjara poet Ali Cobby Eckermann on RN's Indigenous arts and culture program AWAYE! illustrates the power of Eldership — for millennia past and into the future. This week, in honour of the 2023 NAIDOC Week and in line with its theme, For Our Elders, we're bringing you a collection of stories about the guidance, mentorship, and wisdom offered by Elders, along with other powerful Indigenous stories and experiences. Listen to this feature interview with William Tilmouth, an Arrernte man and the founder of groundbreaking First Nations youth charity, Children's Ground. He has just been recognised as Male Elder of the Year by The National NAIDOC Week Awards. Scroll back to previous episodes of AWAYE! to hear a special series featuring First Nations creatives discussing the Elders who have most inspired them, from media trailblazer Aunty Freda Glynn to community linguist Aunty Joyce Bonner. Then, explore a range of other fascinating stories from our arts, culture and history programs, including the history of land rights anthem, From Little Things Big Things Grow; the past and future of First Nations writing in Australia; and the legacy of colonial law and justice systems on Indigenous peoples. Enjoy your weekend, Anna Levy, RN deputy digital editor Enjoy getting ABC RN in your inbox? Invite your friends to sign up too! |
