Friend — A free and open press is one of our most important values as a nation. It is included in the rights protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution, and is a cornerstone of any resilient democracy.
The first half of this year has brought new and unprecedented challenges to independent journalists. The economic crisis brought by COVID has shuttered newsrooms in an already-struggling industry. In late May and early June, we saw police arrest journalists on live television, and fire tear gas and rubber bullets at news crews while they covered the demonstrations that followed the murder of George Floyd.
These events are a reminder to us of why independent Jewish journalism is so important. As a Jewish nonprofit supported by our readers and a broad array of philanthropies, The Forward is not beholden to any individual, institution, or ideology. We are always relevant but also irreverent, challenging conventional wisdom in respectful ways as we showcase the full spectrum of voices shaping our community's experience.
If you agree that this work is important — now more than ever before in our United States — please donate to support our work.
Who else will tell the Jewish story? Who else will share the wide spectrum of Jewish thought and opinion? Who else offers such rich, deep understanding of our Jewish past and how it affects our lives today? If you believe in what we do, show your support. Here is what one reader has said about why this aspect of our work matters to her: “In today's world of fake journalism, dishonest and unscrupulous leaders, I find it necessary to support media which informs people of the facts as they are. I also support the need to enable Jewish culture to continue to grow and thrive.” — Nancy D. This Independence Day we choose to celebrate the power of an independent Jewish press and the full diversity of perspectives, opinions, and voices that it makes possible. If this is part of your vision for a more just and equitable United States, make a donation to The Forward today. Stay safe and stay healthy this holiday weekend.
Sincerely,
