About two decades ago, sculptor Alma Allen built a modest, low-slung residence and studio on a hilltop bordering California's Joshua Tree National Park. Six years later, the 14-acre high desert spread was acquired in an off-market deal by a tastemaking couple who restored and updated the understated but stylish retreat, adding bedrooms and bathrooms while maintaining the original spirit and shape. Newly returned to the market at $3 million, the home's two pavilions are sandwiched between parallel walls of hand-stacked stone and separated by a serene courtyard. Off to one side of the three-bedroom house is a metal Quonset hut, and across the driveway, a couple of not-yet-improved shipping containers are configured in an L shape. Meanwhile, in L.A.'s Toluca Lake, the final home of late stage and screen star Linda Lavin has floated onto the market at $2.2 million.
