Times Past

The Canberra Times covered the programme for Old Parliament House's annual opening ceremony in what might be considered extreme detail on this day in 1929. The story extended the entire length of the Times' then-broadsheet front page, and outlined everything from the ringing of the bells at 10.25am, to the afternoon adjournment. "Upon [members'] arrival the ... authority to open parliament will be read, and will inform parliament that after members have been sworn and the speaker has been chosen, his excellency the governor-general will deliver his opening speech," the story said.
