Ami Colé is one of the buzziest brands on the market today, so I was shocked when beauty market editor James Manso came back from a meeting with founder Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye and shared that a well-known investor told the entrepreneur that if she couldn’t raise more money, the brand would shut down. After all – it was just four years ago that the industry collectively pledged to more effectively support Black founders in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the new social justice movement.
James wanted to find out if the picture was equally as challenging for other Black founders today, and decided to reach out to a number of brands to take a temperature check. His findings are a sobering reminder of the difficulties that many continue to face today.
Elsewhere, European beauty editor Jennifer Weil spoke with Givaudan chief executive officer Gilles Andrier, as the Fragrance Foundation prepares to induct him into its Hall of Fame — the first supplier to receive such an honor. And Noor Lobad rounds up the six hottest TikTok makeup trends. Spoiler alert: Strawberry makeup is back — just in time for summer. Read more about them, plus what's making news, including a new investment by Kering Beauté, in this week's pages. —Jenny B. Fine, editor in chief, Beauty Inc |
