Inside the fundraising race for Baton Rouge mayor between Sharon Weston Broome, Sid Edwards

Mayor's race: Baton Rouge's 2024 mayoral election continues to break fundraising records as money pours into campaigns in the race's final days.

Incumbent Democrat Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome is on pace to raise more than $1 million this cycle, eclipsing amounts she's raised in any of her previous campaigns for office.

And while Republican Sid Edwards lags far behind the mayor's fundraising total, his supporters say the $220,000 he has raised — including support from Louisiana's state Republican party — is enough to mount a serious challenge to Broome. Revival: A unique project to resuscitate the dying Maurepas Swamp, an overlooked treasure nestled between New Orleans and Baton Rouge along Interstate 10, broke ground on Tuesday.  

The project will reunite one of the nation's largest wetlands with the Mississippi River more than 80 years after the two were disconnected. Read more. 


University Club wetlands: A development proposal for the University Club subdivision in Baton Rouge has been tossed between the East Baton Rouge Parish and St. George's planning commission. Once again, St. George officials have deferred — until March — a decision on the proposal while the new city figures out how to adopt development codes from Baton Rouge. Read the full story.
