Virginia Woolf famously wrote, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." For prolific travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, it was less a room and more of a wee island off the coast of Maine. The rustic Wheeler Bay getaway, acquired by Theroux nearly 25 years ago, is now available to another seclusion-seeker with a price of $1.3 million. Rocky and heavily wooded, the pristine island has two charming, unfussy residences, a lofty main house and a two-bedroom guest cottage, both hand-built in the 1970s by the late contemporary artist and furniture-maker Duane Paluska. A dock facilitates trips to and from the mainland. And, in much more meticulously manicured Greenwich, Connecticut, a 10-acre estate with a $16.5 million price tag is a sports enthusiast’s dream, replete with an indoor tennis court, a putting green, and a half-court basketball court tucked up into the third-floor attic of an 18,000-square-foot mansion.
