The late and internationally celebrated Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer's fantastical designs made him an influential figure in the development of modern architecture around the world in the mid-19th century. Due to his leftist politics, however, he was forbidden from working within the United States. That did not prove to be a deterrent for filmmaker Joseph Strick and writer Anne Strick, who commissioned the modernist master to build a low-slung five-bedroom home in Santa Monica, California. The only residential project Niemeyer completed in North America, it's now expertly restored, smartly modernized, and on the market. And in the U.K., another inventive filmmaker, Tim Burton, has hoisted his cinematic country retreat in the Oxfordshire village of Sutton Courtenay up for grabs, and it is much less macabre and far more traditional than you might imagine. |
