On the 25th anniversary of the Web, its inventor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee stood on the Webby Awards stage to mark the moment. Instead of a hallmark 5-Word speech he used three words to call the industry to action to protect the Internet. His words: “Up to us.”

It’s Up to Us: A Responsible Tech Future, The Webby Awards’ new industry report is an overview of the digital industry’s take on responsible technology at this pivotal moment in history.

Produced as part of a special initiative with Omidyar Network, this report touches on key areas that are shaping technology, including data collection, privacy and security, misinformation, algorithmic bias, accessibility and inclusivity and culture. In conjunction, they have introduced new categories into The Webby Awards — Accessible Technology, Responsible Information, Responsible Innovation and Sustainable Technology —which have been informed by months of research, interviews and a survey with nearly 300 industry professionals.

By inspiring the digital industry to build responsible digital ecosystems, and recognize those who are already doing so, we can get closer to achieving this original promise. Together we must commit to consciously create and develop new technologies with responsibility embedded in the strategy, architecture, design and within new lines of code. It’s up to us!
