Dear John,

I love this thought:

"If your boss demands loyalty, give him integrity. But if he demands integrity, then give him loyalty.”

USAF Col. John Boyd (1927-1997), in Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War Paperback, Robert Coram (2004)

I believe loyalty is incredibly important. How do we decide who and what we are loyal to? Just like the quote, our loyalty needs to be towards a higher standard. In other words, I am loyal to someone, or some organization because of the vision, virtues, and values that the person or the organization demonstrates.

The way to create loyalty in those you lead is to set a high standard that you strive to follow, and then ask those you lead to be loyal to the standard while at the same time building a fantastic virtues driven relationship with them. Being loyal because it is required, or because of position, will often require you to lose your Integrity.

The sequence is simple - loyalty follows integrity.
