Department chairs help make important curricular, personnel, and budget decisions and increasingly play a crucial role in innovations around student success, research, and technology. Yet, while the department chair is typically the first rung on the ladder to senior leadership in academia, many take on the position without the necessary training or mentorship. We at Ithaka S+R are thrilled once again to be working with The Chronicle of Higher Education and Dever Justice, LLC to help fill this gap with a virtual series specifically geared to addressing today's challenges.
Through The Chronicleâs Strategic-Leadership Program for Department Chairs, participants will engage in a three-day professional development program where they will develop new skills, overcome the challenges of their role, and create a strategic vision for individual and departmental growth.
The program includes three hours of small-group workshops, during which chairs will participate in peer-to-peer problem-solving, create a forward-looking development plan, and discuss current challenges, all facilitated with hands-on coaching by experienced academic leaders. In addition, participants will be able to join four roundtables featuring experts and leaders discussing both topics of broad national importance in higher education and issues of institutional strategy.
