| Question of the Week | | Tuesday we asked: By the end of the year, both Central Massachusetts community colleges will have new presidents. James Vander Hooven took over at Mount Wachusett Community College in March, and the board of trustees at Quinsigamond Community College picked Luis Pedraja to take over for Gail Carberry, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Vander Hooven said he plans to spend the next few months creating out a strategic plan, which will include understanding what the college's role is in the business community, and how it can better serve area companies. | What is the most important thing community colleges can do for companies in their area? | | I would have chosen both the first and the last option if this poll allowed more than one answer. It would obviously benefit both businesses and job seeking individuals to have training for available jobs. On the other hand, I think that community colleges have traditionally served to provide higher education for those who did not have the time or money to attend a four year college straight out of high school and I don't think it would be a good idea for them to abandon that role. It is important to remember that transfer agreements with the 4 year institutions are a must. There is an ever growing need for Central Mass businesses to continue to evolve their management and ingenuity assets. We are now competing for business against the City of Boston, which has become the darling of business. Only by keeping our businesses flexible and well managed can we compete to pull some of the new mass jobs out to Framingham and Worcester. Our job force has to be adaptable and a Community College is the perfect place to research change management and other ideas that wil keep us competitive. | See All Comments >> | |
