SUMMER 2025 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

NASA ASTROBIOLOGY STUDENT HISTORIAN

The NASA Astrobiology Program is pleased to announce a paid internship opportunity for summer 2025 for a qualified graduate student or senior undergraduate student with interests at the intersection of astrobiology and the history of science. This position is based at Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with flexibility for hybrid or remote work arrangements.

The application deadline for the summer 2025 session is

February 28, 2025.

APPLY TODAY!

The selected intern will work with the Senior Scientist for Astrobiology Strategy and a NASA Postdoctoral Management Program Fellow, reviewing the history behind and the evolution of NASA’s Astrobiology Roadmaps (1998, 2003) and Strategies (2008, 2015). Key responsibilities include conducting archival research and oral history interviews to preserve the voices, memories, and perspectives that shaped the development of these documents. In addition to historical preservation, the intern will be encouraged to historically analyze the data they collect, synthesizing their findings into a cohesive historical narrative that will not only serve as a valuable reflection on the processes that have shaped NASA Astrobiology’s programmatic history, but also help establish best practices for archiving the ongoing NASA-DARES effort for future reference.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen. A security background check will be conducted on those selected for the internship.
  • Be a currently enrolled graduate student or undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited college or university at the time of application.
  • Must possess strong research and writing skills and be comfortable conducting interviews.
  • A background in history of science or a related academic field is preferable. Familiarity with NASA’s Astrobiology Program or astrobiology research in general is a plus, though not required.
