Intersections of Race, Gender, and Politics in Sports
Wednesday, October 20, 2021
2:00-3:00 PM ET, 11:00 AM-12:00 PM PT

In recent years, sports have been a hyper-visible space where politics and ideas about race, gender, and citizenship have collided. Such intersections are not new, however, and the talks in this webinar will bring forward histories of activism, sports, and social movements while demonstrating how innovative methodologies and digital databases can be instrumental in uncovering these stories.

Dr. Maryam Aziz will first speak about their research on martial arts and the Black Power Movement, analyzing central ideas about gender, sexuality, and embodiment in the mid to late 20th century. Their talk will also highlight how digitized newspaper archives and databases can resurface these histories when researchers creatively adapt their methods and keyword searches. Dr. Amira Rose Davis will extend the discussion about digital databases by highlighting how ProQuest’s Black newspaper databases have informed her work on Black women’s athletic labor and activism. Dr. Davis will then connect her historical research with her public-facing intellectual work to demonstrate how re-reading archives and blending methodologies can illuminate voices and stories that are often overlooked.

Together, Drs. Aziz and Davis will reveal the ways in which thinking critically about sport can re-frame how we think about American society, the archive, and the production of historical knowledge.
