Dear John,
We have exciting news: Elbert Ventura, a journalist and editor with more than 15 years of experience covering the social sector and public policy and engaging diverse authors to share their ideas with wider audiences, will be the new editor-in-chief of the
Chronicle of Philanthropy as I transition to serve as CEO of our organization.
Since 2018, Elbert has served as editor and editorial director at Vox.com. He helped launch Future Perfect, a special section at Vox dedicated to the world’s most consequential and under-covered problems and solutions.
Elbert has previously served as managing editor at
Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, where he helped set the editorial vision, conceived and edited essays and book reviews, and researched and worked with authors in academia, think tanks, advocacy, and journalism.
I got to know Elbert when he was associate editor of
The Chronicle of Higher Education, commissioning and editing essays and features and recruiting academics, critics, and journalists to write for
The Chronicle Review.
Elbert’s roots at the
Chronicle are an important reason I selected him as our next editorial leader. For nearly 35 years, the Chronicle of Higher Education Inc. was the company that owned the
Chronicle of Philanthropy until we became
an independent nonprofit in April. And it is that organization’s commitment to integrity and quality that is an essential part of the DNA of our newly independent nonprofit.
A few days ago we gathered
Chronicle staff members from across the country in our D.C. offices to meet Elbert and discuss our plans for expanding our journalism and other information services to serve the diverse social sector better.
Watching Elbert in action, it was clear to me he is the right person to help steer our journalism in this new era, balancing continuity and growth. He is an experienced and respected writer, editor, and leader. We are so fortunate to gain his expertise, perspective, and creativity, as we enter a new era of innovation and impact.
Elbert joins our growing leadership team. Our first-ever chief revenue officer,
Rodney Mahone, is devising strategies and adding new colleagues to help us expand our audience and provide a suite of new products and services. He is joined by our new COO, Amy Markham, and our senior director of development, Michael Brown.
We’re also expanding our journalism team, recruiting candidates who can ensure we are increasingly responsive to the stories and needs of a sector that is evolving rapidly.
Stay tuned for more information about our plans for listening tours, opportunities for you to share your thoughts about our work and how we can do better.
In the meantime, I want to thank you for following the
Chronicle’s work – whether you read our articles, subscribe to our newsletters, or attend our online webinars or briefings.
Please feel free to
drop me a line about any ideas you have about ways we can serve the nonprofit world better.
Stacy Palmer, Chief Executive Officer
