Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow, Kaitlan Collins

CNN announced plans for a new and reimagined morning show that will be co-hosted by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow, and Kaitlan Collins.

This is the biggest move by newly-installed CNN CEO Chris Licht, who said in a press release: “There is no stronger combination of talent than Don, Poppy and Kaitlan to deliver on our promise of a game-changing morning news program.”

Licht went on to praise the anchors as "uniquely intelligent, reliable and compelling" with "a rare and palpable chemistry."

"Combined with CNN’s resources and global newsgathering capabilities, we will offer a smart, bold and refreshing way to start the day," he added.

The new morning show will replace CNN’s current breakfast program New Day, which John Berman and Brianna Keilar will continue to host until the new show launches.

Berman and Keilar will remain with the network, assuming new roles later this year.

The detonation of CNN’s morning show, which has fared particularly poorly in the ratings, marks the start of a new era for the network.

As Licht noted to staff in a note obtained by Mediaite: “The next chapter of CNN is beginning to shape.”

MEDIA LOSER:
Matt Walsh

Matt Walsh is getting ripped apart for arguing that the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid is not "scientific" enough.

“Also, by the way, with The Little Mermaid – can we also just mention that, from a scientific perspective, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have someone with darker skin who lives deep in the ocean,” he said on Wednesday's edition of The Matt Walsh Show.

A clip from the segment, posted to Twitter by James Campbell of Media Matters, ended up going viral, with several Twitter users accusing Walsh of racism.

CNN Digital Senior Entertainment Writer Lisa France sat down with Brianna Keilar on Thursday'sedition of New Day, during which shecalled out Walsh and others raising objections to a Black Ariel.

“Racism is real, unfortunately, and people get so offended,” France said.“Those who say we always try to make things about race, people make it about race when they’re online and they’re trying to debate the fact that, ‘Oh, she couldn’t have darker skin because she’s a mermaid and she’s under the water and the sun wouldn’t be able to reach her.’ That’s about race.”

Mediaite's Sarah Rumpf also posed a solid point on the "science" of it all, noting that mermaids are often depicted above water or near the surface.
