Investigation: Public defender turmoil causing trouble in court

BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer

Turmoil in the public defender's office is causing problems in court, according to emails from a judge obtained by The Advocate. The judge has been telling colleagues that attorneys are missing court dates and showing up in the courtroom talking to clients for the first time, among other problems.

Here's the latest in our ongoing investigation into problems in the office tasked with protecting the legal rights of people who can't afford an attorney.

After yesterday's momentous court ruling denying a push to create a new city of St. George, we're working to bring you more information about the decision and what it means for East Baton Rouge Parish.

Here's a rundown of why the judge ruled the way he did, plus reaction from all the key players. And here's an explainer on why the judge denied accusations that the push to create St. George is racially discriminatory, even as he ruled against a new city.

Our reporters are still working on this important story, so stay tuned for more.

Community rallies behind burn victim

Clay Moock was burned over 70% of his body in a gas leak. He was a star baseball player at Woodlawn High, and his father was the school's beloved coach.

Moock's horrible injuries showed his family the urgent need for blood donations, so they started trying to get people to donate. Now a whole community has showed up to help — including people at one of Woodlawn's rivals, Dunham.

Here's the story of how the community is rallying behind Clay.
