Organisations have increasingly joined the sustainability movement in large numbers as an initiative towards sustainable development and healthy living. Conversations around carbon neutrality - with a focus on becoming ‘net-zero’ - have been circulating in recent years, promising businesses a solution to combat climate issues.
The concept of carbon neutrality was first strengthened by the Paris Agreement in 2015, whose main goal was to limit global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By adopting the initiative, corporates help forge a greener future through investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, or sustainability projects that balance out carbon emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Six years into the Agreement, and the efforts were proven fruitful as more than 115 countries have submitted a new or updated NDC (Nationally determined contributions) and 6,000 major corporates have pledged to reduce gas emissions. In 2019, Britain became the first G7 country to pass net-zero emission laws, urging leaders worldwide to follow suit. As technological progress further advances and the cost of renewable energy has declined over the years, going green is no longer seen as a trade-off for economic growth, especially in booming Asian economies. In its latest discussion with COP26 President Alok Sharma, Vietnam has affirmed its goal to reach net-zero emissions in the near future, with a heavy emphasis on sustainable consumption and the green transition process in all economic sectors.
‘Achieving Net Zero, Carbon Markets and Their Role in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Perspectives from Vietnam and the Asia Region’ is the first webinar in a series of events co-organised by Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and British Chamber of Commerce Vietnam (BritCham) to promote sustainable development in Vietnam and the application of ESG among businesses. This will support participating businesses and organisations devise effective strategies for their sustainable development. These events will involve key relevant stakeholders from the government, regulators and industry thought leaders.
