Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder that affects the large intestine and causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, constipation, and diarrhea. Several complementary health approaches have been studied to see if they are helpful for IBS symptoms.

  • Although there isnt firm evidence, some studies suggest that hypnotherapy or mindfulness meditation training may help.

  • Some probiotics may improve IBS symptoms such as bloating and flatulence.

  • Peppermint oil capsules may be modestly helpful for abdominal pain and bloating.
