Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal condition. Symptoms include repeated abdominal pain with changes in bowel movements (diarrhea, constipation, or both).

Complementary health approaches that have shown promise for helping to relieve IBS symptoms include gut-directed hypnotherapy and peppermint oil. Some evidence suggests that certain probiotics may help, but theres not enough evidence to know for sure. Research on acupuncture for IBS symptoms is not conclusive. There is very little research on meditation and mindfulness, yoga, or relaxation techniques for IBS.
