In today's newsletter, a Detroit Lions vet is reportedly coming out of retirement, rent control reform has died during Michigan Legislature’s lame duck session and the IRS is set to send out $2.4B in special stimulus payments. |
2025 is right around the corner🎆 |
It's almost time to trade in our ugly holiday sweaters for noisemakers and champagne toasts as we get ready to ring in 2025. For those looking for a place to celebrate, cities across Michigan are gearing up to host ball drops, firework shows and other celebrations. Tickets are still available for one of mid-Michigan’s most popular New Year’s Eve community-gathering parties, "Midnight on Main". Children can even partake in a little NYE fun with a family-friendly celebration at the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum in Saginaw. A day long New Year's Eve celebration in South Haven will end with 1,000 beach balls dropping over downtown guests at midnight. We can't mention Michigan's NYE parties without highlighting Ludington. The town was just named for having one of the best ball drops in the country by USA Today readers. |

IRS set to send out $2.4B in special stimulus payments, will you receive one? |
Pay out: An estimated 1 million taxpayers are set to automatically receive payments of up to $1,400 in the coming weeks after the IRS discovered many taxpayers hadn’t properly claimed a credit owed to them. The payments are owed to taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return, but when filing “the data field for the Recovery Rebate Credit was left blank or was filled out as $0 when the taxpayer was actually eligible for the credit,” according to the IRS. Happening next month: Ford Motor Company and General Motors are reportedly donating vehicles and $1 million each to President-elect Donald Trump’s January inauguration ceremony. Better luck next time: Rent control may not be a tool available to Michigan communities any time soon. Legislation to repeal the state’s 1988 ban on local rent regulations died in the Michigan Legislature’s lame duck session. |

The U.P. ditched coal power before the rest of Michigan. What comes next? |
In the environment: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula ditched burning coal as a means of generating electricity in 2019, some 13 years before the rest of the state is expected to follow suit. It decommissioned aging power plants burning the dirtiest fossil fuel, cutting planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions by 71% between 2013 and 2022. But putting coal-burning dinosaurs to rest may prove easier than the next step facing the U.P.: phasing out fossil fuels from the grid entirely or slashing emissions to near zero while still maintaining reliability. Yoopers now face questions about how gas generators mesh with a new state requirement of 100% clean energy in the next 15 years. How the U.P. got off coal – and what the future may hold for the region’s power grid – is the subject of a 165-page study the commission released in early December, which hints at several paths forward. The McLaughlin Grows Urban Farm, located in Muskegon, is wrapping up another fruitful year. The mission is to create community while also fighting food insecurity. Muskegon has had a high percentage of families receiving food assistance. Urban farms have long been considered a way to help bridge the gap on providing healthy food to communities. |

Veteran quarterback unretires to sign with Detroit Lions |
Coming back: Teddy Bridgewater was last spotted in the NFL walking out of Levi’s Stadium after the NFC title game in an embrace with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. The Lions had just lost the NFC title game to the San Francisco 49ers, and Bridgewater was heading off into retirement. Now, he’s reportedly unretiring and plans to rejoin Campbell and the Lions ahead of the playoffs, per the NFL Network. Looking ahead: The last time the Detroit Lions played at Levi’s Stadium, they endured a heartbreaking 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game last season. When the teams meet again next Monday in the same venue, experts are predicting a different outcome. NFL analysts expect the Lions to exact their revenge on the 49ers, securing another road win and continuing their franchise-best season. On the ice: Derek Lalonde was fired from his head coach position with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. Lalonde was midway through his third season, with the team just two points out of the Eastern Conference basement at 13-17-4. Todd McLellan was hired Thursday, signed to a multiyear contract, to replace Lalonde. |
